MY FAVORITE HOLLIES ALBUM,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Another Night (Audio CD)
When "Another Night" was released way back in the seventies, critics blasted it and signaled as the end of the Hollies' long line of hits. I have always disagreed; "Another Night" contains some of the best tunes they ever recorded, and the addition of seven extra tunes makes this a classic CD. It's all here: their soaring unparalleled harmonies, restrained musicianship, and their haunting arrangements. "Another Night" is a great song, with a hypnotic opening and dynamic rhythmic pulse; "Sandy" written by Bruce Springsteen, is gorgeous and surpasses the writer's version; "Lonely Hobo Lullabye" is a mournful yet poignant look at wandering; "I'm Down," is typical Hollies harmonies soaring above a great melody; "Give Me Time," joins that list of Hollies greats; the live versions of "Another Night" and "Sandy" are not as good as the studio tracks, but entertaining nonetheless. I even liked their cover of Springsteen's "Born to Run." The Hollies were one of the great bands of the sixties/seventies, and have given us such wonderful classics as "Air That I Breathe," "He Ain't Heavy" and "Long Cool Woman." This, however, is my favorite!

When Allen Clarke returned to the Hollies he came back with a bang on The Hollies (1974) album and the hit single The Air That I Breath. The songwriting of Clark, Hicks and Sylvester were at their peak then and thru the mid 70's. The albums The Hollies, Another Night and Write On were the very best albums the Hollies ever did. I give a sincere nod to Another Night as the best of those. My favorite song on it is the last one, Lucy, as a poignant a song as they ever did. The Hollies harmonies are at their full aurora splendor on this album. Steve

Deliciously Melodic and Harmonic Soft-Rock,
By dev1 (Baltimore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Night (Audio CD)
Despite their lack of Top-10 hits, the Hollies continued to produce some excellent albums well after the original British Invasion. Another Night from 1975 contains more than a few deliciously melodic and harmonic soft-rockers. My own introduction to the work of Bruce Springsteen was not the Boss himself, but "4th of July - Asbury Park" from this album. The Hollies version is both haunting and lonesome. For my money, Allan Clarke is one of the finest voices in Pop music. Here, Clarke leads symphonic beauties such as "I'm Down," "Give Me Time" and "Lucy." Harmony vocals provided by the other band members are the icing on the cake. The folksy "Lonely Hobo Lullaby" (reminiscent of Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door") is also alluring.Unfortunately, Another Night gets tedious when the band attempts a harder edge. "Look Out Johnny (There's a Monkey on Your..." and "You Gave Me Life" try, but fail to rock. They're embarrassing. Budget conscious collectors should search for the Hollies EMI "Boxes." Released in 1995, each contains four Hollies' CDs replicating the original vinyl LP format, and selling for about forty dollars.
