Brilliant Playing All Around, not to mention arangements!,

What can one say but sweet! A beautiful album appreciable by more than just bass players. While those of us who do play upright will be knocked out by Oscar's solo rendition of Stardust, any jazz lover will be impressed by the outstanding performances by Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd. The lucious arranging (and Gryce's clarinet) on Scorpio are simply to die for.

Was introduced to Jazz by older brother and this was one of the first albums I heard in 1957 in Atlantic City,N.J..
As a avid jazz record collector and musician this record would be in my top ten in my vast record collection. Gigi Gryce was a giant contributor to post bop as a composer, saxist and leader of the legendery Jazz Lab which featured Donald Byrd around this period. A most CD highlighting the best in African -American Jazz.

One of my best friends bought this album for me for Christmas of 1960. We were high school seniors and already dedicated jazzers. If you play or just love the work of a great jazz bassist, you cannot beat this album. So many bassists have emulated Pettiford, or tried to, that you will recognize the sound whether or not you've ever heard him play. Pettiford and Mingus - that's about all you need to know about improvisational jazz bass.

I've been a jazzbo for years, but this is the first time I've ever sat down and heard Pettiford and Wow! His playing. Everyone's playing. The arrangements. The compositions. Wow! An absolute creme de la creme of west-coast gorgosity! Much of it as good as anything on the Gil Evans Miles albums ("Sketches of Spain" and the "Birth of the Cool" albums). Not a wrong note. This is cool jazz at its best. Or better!
