Book Description

The Florida Noir Series September 20, 2008
For those unafraid of the dark . . . . Comes a series of entertaining and thought-provoking stories as modern as MySpace and as timeless as revenge. Welcome to Desperation, the small north Florida mill town that is purgatory to 3,636 doomed souls-less after tonight. Beneath the billowing smoke that blots out the sun, its inhabitants lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. Another Quiet Night in Desperation is a powerful collection of literate, provocative tales of lost innocence, doomed romanticism, hard-edged cynicism, obsession, desperate desire, and shadowy sexuality-stories about adults for adults. In these fictions of fate and futility, entropy and eroticism, acclaimed author Michael Lister takes readers on an exciting and twisting tour of the heartbreak of human frailty in a dead-end town dangling on the edge of oblivion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noir short stories, August 12, 2008

This review is from: Another Quiet Night In Desperation (The Florida Noir Series) (Paperback)
In North Florida is a town called Desperation which is home to 3,636 poor souls. ANOTHER QUIET NIGHT IN DESPERATION is a collection of stories about the residents of this town. The inhabitants all seem to have one thing in common, that is there are desperate and want a better life. This is definitely noir fiction.

Each character seems desperate, but also hardened with the life they have been leading. However, Michael Lister makes you see the vulnerabilities in everyone. This is what makes this collection of stories so enthralling.

When one poor unfortunate soul finds himself accused of murdering his wife, imagine his remorse when he discovers he actually helped the killer. These stories are not predictable and each tale leads you in one direction and jerks you back for the conclusion. Some are almost too realistic to be viewed as fiction. This is as if someone is watching and recording these events in their unfortunate lives.

With the flavor of "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" these stories are disturbing and thought provoking. My complaint about this collection is that I wanted more when the book was finished. These stories are hauntingly addictive.

Teri Davis
