Book Description

September 1, 2006
Darrin Bell's Candorville is an insightful comic strip for today's world. Brutally honest but still evenhanded, Candorville takes on some of society's toughest issues, giving readers something to think about--as well as smirks, chuckles, and guffaws.

Another Stereotype Bites the Dust is a collection of creator Darrin Bell's Candorville cartoon strip. In this thought-provoking strip Bell uses a diverse group of friends to paint a real yet humorous portrait of inner-city America. An educated underachiever, Lemont Brown is an aspiring writer. Socially conscious, he wants to work at changing the world and infusing it with wisdom and justice--if only he could pay his rent. Lemont's childhood friend Susan Garcia is a book-smart and street savvy Mexican-American woman who won't let bigotry or any glass ceiling keep her down. And Lemont's friend Clyde (aka C-Dog) is a streetwise thug and undiscovered rapper who'd rather mooch off his mother than get a job.

Another Stereotype Bites the Dust deals with some tough issues--poverty, homelessness, racism, and personal responsibility--with knowing irony and incisive satire. Bell uses edgy dialogue and modern situations to jab everything from political correctness to political spinning, from political hindsight to office politics, making it a hit with the socially aware.

More About the Author

I was born in a small shack behind my grandfather's house in South Central Los Angeles. As a small child, I had a habit of constantly asking "why?" - a habit I've never seemed to shake.

I was educated in the best public schools in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, I was admitted to U.C. Berkeley, where I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science (with a minor in procrastination). I held several odd jobs (mostly as an on-campus security guard) to pay my way through college, while at the same time freelancing editorial cartoons to the LA Times, SF Chronicle, Oakland Tribune and other papers.

Yadda yadda yadda, I now live in Hollywood, CA; where I create the syndicated comic strip "Candorville," and co-create the syndicated strip "Rudy Park."

5.0 out of 5 stars A wickedly funny, "must-read" humor book showcasing the talent, insight, and biting criticisms of a rising star, November 4, 2006
This review is from: Another Stereotype Bites the Dust: A Candorville Collection (Paperback)
Another Stereotype Bites the Dust is the second collection of Candorville comic strips by award-winning cartoonist Darrin Bell. Set in the inner city, Another Stereotype Bites the Dust follows the educated yet underachieving African-American writer Lemont Brown and his friends, an assertive Mexican-American woman and a mooching, rapper who still lives with his mother. The Candorville strip does not shy from edgy dialogue or equal jabs at modern social problems, governmental failings, and excessive political correctness. In one strip, Lemont Brown tries to vote and is told "Well that explains why you haven't received your absentee ballot, Mr. Brawn. You're on the felon list. Felons aren't allowed to vote in Candorville." "Brown! Not Brawn! Brown!" "Thank you for turning yourself in, Mr. Brawn." A wickedly funny, "must-read" humor book showcasing the talent, insight, and biting criticisms of a rising star among cartoonists.
