Well Kept Secret - Tell the world,
By
This review is from: Another Thing (Audio CD)
Graham Gouldman is perhaps the least known member of 10cc. I find it increadible that people still hold Kevin Godley & Lol Creme in such high esteem when they quite the band after only 3 albums and don't give credit to Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman - who were to me, the most prolific writers of 10cc's hits. Anyway, onto Another Thing by Graham Gouldman:
Graham released a solo album in the 60's called...you guessed it, The Graham Gouldman Thing. so it natrually followed that his subsequent (but not next - remember Animalymics?) solo album be called Another Thing. this album is great. If you like 10cc, and if you are into the music of the 70's, then this is for you. Excellent production, fine musichianship. Terrific song writing and ... well, it's just good! I wish Graham would release more of his work. The world is worse off for the lack of it :-)

The long time between solo albums worth the wait.."And Another Thing" recalls the best of 10cc that Gouldman was responsible for,

Graham Gouldman is best known as a former member of 10cc what not everyone realizes is that he also wrote major hits for artists from the 60's and 70's as well as being a member of Wax with Andrew Gold ("Lonely Boy"). Gouldman wrote songs such as "Pamela, Pamela" (The Mindbenders), "For Your Love" (The Yardbirds), "Bus Stop" (The Hollies), "Heart Full of Soul" (Chris Issacs, The Yardbirds) as well as song such as "I'm Not in Love", "The Things We Do For Love", "Dreadlock Holiday" (all co-written with 10cc's Eric Stewart).
His second solo album (if you're not counting "Animalypmics" the soundtrack to animated film that he cut with members of 10cc)features a marvelous combination of new material as well as some older stuff (his killer version of his own "Heart Full of Soul"). With most of the tracks co-produced by Gold, "Another Thing" (a clever reference to Gouldman's first solo album from the 60's which featured his versions of songs written for others as well)sounds terrific. The only flaw with the disc is that it is mastered a bit loud (it was released in 2000)but, other than that, the production is nearly flawless. The only issue is the production touches on a couple of tracks which for me don't work quite as well as they could (I personally prefer REAL drums to drum machines). That's only an issue on two tracks here. The production works extremely well for the most part and the songwriting remains at the high standard that Gouldman established throughout his career. In particular "You Stole My Love" the opening track and the second track "Waiting with Angles" with its otherworldly arrangement act as a one-two punch paving the way for the strong quality of the rest of the album. 10cc fans will appreciate the amusing 12th "hidden" track that recounts 10cc's history in 30 seconds. The CD booklet includes all the lyrics as well as well as Graham's (or "GiGi" as the other members of 10cc knew him)thoughts on the songs, arrangements on the album and history of the material. Hopefully Cherry Red or one of the other UK reissue labels (it wouldn't happen in the U.S. folks--10cc while they did have a couple of big hits here never reached quite the same level of fame as they did in the UK from the beginning)will now reissue "Animalympics" (and maybe Graham's colleague from 10cc Eric Stewart's "Frootie Rooties" STILL MIA on CD). "Another Thing" reminds us how important to 10cc Graham Gouldman was (even though he rarely sang their hits--most of those were sang by the soulful Eric Stewart)and Graham's vocals demonstrate what an underrated and gifted vocalist he was as well. I'm looking forward to Graham's next solo album. Highly recommended. 4 1/2 stars.

I was a huge fan of 10cc in the 70's and early 80's. I recently got back into their music when I purchased the '10cc Collected' on CD. I always favored the 10cc songs written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. When I did a little online research on Graham, I realized just how much music he wrote that was performed by other artists (the Yardbirds, the Hollies, etc). This motivated me to pick up 'And Another Thing'.
In some ways, this CD sounds quite different from Graham's earlier work with 10cc. These songs sound a bit more personal. I appreciate the liner notes, Graham's comments on each of the songs give some insight into his creative process. 'Walking With Angels' is a stand out song for me, and it really hits home. I am playing it at my father's funeral (which will be any day now). Some of my other favorites are 'Dancing Days', 'Single Tonight' and 'Just Another Day'. I would have liked some of his 'English style reggae' in the mix (refer to 'Dreadlock Holiday'). I know Graham has resurrected 10cc (he's the only original member in the group) and has done some touring around Europe. I can only hope that he will venture 'across the pond' and play some gigs in the U.S. (specifically Boston).
