Looking for that perfect cd to groove to? Toback's got it!,
By Keri (Tracy, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another True Fiction (Audio CD)
In his latetst release, Jeremy Toback has created an album chalk-full of tunes guaranteed to send you into full foot-tapping, body-shaking motion. His guitar work will lighten your spirits and send you on your way w/a smile. From "Universe Work" to "Day Will Rise", Toback gets your full attention with his upbeat accoustic jams. Like the more mellow songs? Jeremy's got you covered there, too, with "Will I Find You" and "Perfect from the Start" among others. A truly amazing album all around. A highly energetic album to pop into your player for all occasions.

You gotta hear this album,

I thought Toback's last album (Perfect Flux Thing) was gonna be impossible to top, but this follow-up is fantastic! With unexpected hints of Neil Young (Will I Find You), Tom Petty (Green Light) and John Lennon (Day Will Rise), Jeremy Toback has created an album that gets better each time you listen to it.Since seeing Mr. Toback at Lollapalooza a couple years back, I've known he is a force to be reckoned with on the nation's music landscape. Another True Fiction confirms this in unequivocal fashion. Rock on good brother Toback!

I think it's great!,

I'm not a musician, so maybe there are flaws with this CD that I cannot discern, but I sure like the songs he writes, love the voice, and the guitar is a real good balance between clangy and ballad-y. The lyrics on "will i find you" and "perfect from the start" are way above the usual, too....So from a layperson's perspective, I say buy it!

I'm not much of a music critic-but after switching from sports-talk radio (after 7 years) to current pop/alternative stations-"you make me feel" made me fall in love with music again...so I bought "Another True Fiction"--reviewer Keri (from Tracy, CA, 10-8-99) said it all...

This is a fine example of Jeremy's work, I feel this young man will only get better and better. I would strongly recomend giving this disc a spin but make sure you have the time because I don't think you will want to be interupted once you start.

In a word - integrity,

Few records today can compare with the top-to-bottom artistry displayed in ``Another True Fiction.'' Clear to bone. This record knives its way into the listener's consciousness. If you are finished with mediocre records, if you desire a work of art that delivers a cumulative impact, ``Another True Fiction'' is the one you should buy.

...and the best song writer of the year goes to....,

This review is from: Another True Fiction (Audio CD)
Jeremy Toback, pound-for-pound, note-for-note, one of THE BEST SONG WRITERS this side of the world. With songs like "You make me feel," "revelation," and "another true fiction," Toback has planted his Song-writer Flag & said "I am here to move you!" Toback's recent album turned quite a few heads in a 180 degree spin, but thi album will send them spinning. If you love great vocals, lyrics, music, soulful vibes, and anything else that you define good music as, do yourself a favor & check this album out. You won't be sorry!

more excellent artistry from mr. toback. of course, we expected no less after his last masterpiece, perfect flux thing. "come around" hearkens back to toback's earlier works, while tunes like "green light" and "day will rise" evidence growth and positive new direction in jeremy's songwriting. there's not a bad track to be found on another true fiction. highly recommended.

Non-descript,

Was hoping for more, but there's no edge here, nothing that grabs you. It's basic, vanilla, stuff straight from the Shawn Mullins playbook.Pleasant, inoffensive, but ultimately boring.

Toback blew it,
By A Customer
This review is from: Another True Fiction (Audio CD)
For anyone who remembers the days when Toback used to play seedy dives in LA backed only by his own bass guitar and was blown away, this album is a great let-down. For anyone who first discovered Toback by listening to Brad's "Shame" album and just had to know who wrote that song, "Down," this album is a let-down. For anyone who bought Toback's now out of print self-titled EP when it was first released on Cherry Disc in 1996 and thought "Less I Say" was one of the most brilliant songs ever written, this album is a let-down. For anyone who bought "Perfect Flux Thing" the day it came out and was blown away by songs like "Blood White Gold" and "Eden Trampoline", this album is a let-down. For anyone who felt the new version of "Word Behind Words" on the aforementioned album was just an over-blown cheesy rock ballad that paled in comparison to his other recorded versions of the song and thought it cause for concern that Toback may become too "pop", this album is not entirely a shock. There are a small handful of gems on this album, like the title track, and "Come Around", but nothing that compares to the majesty of his other releases. He has strayed in his lyrics from the abstract poetry of his older songs and the creative arrangements into music that, while it may be more accessable to the public, is a disappointment for anyone who has ever seriously studied music. When I bought this album the day it came out, I put it in the CD player and noticed immediately that Toback had lost the edge that made his music distinctive. He deserves a break considering the quality of his EP and "Perfect Flux Thing," but he now has a strike against him. Pick this one up from a used bin, but don't bother paying full price.
