Nice Remastered Album,
By Mark (Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Voyage (Reis) (Dig) (Audio CD)
They've taken his work from the late 60's and remastered it to very good effect. My favourite cuts on the album are "Wanderin' Rose" and "My Cherie Amour." Recommended.

Very nice listen,
This review is from: Another Voyage (Reis) (Dig) (Audio CD)
This CD is a nice listen, with a couple of good short tunes like "Do What You Wanna" and "Uhuru" mixed in. The songs flow nicely to where none really stand out save for the excellent cover of "My Cherie Amour".

Ramsey Lewis Trio's Goodbye To The 60's,
By
This review is from: Another Voyage (Reis) (Dig) (Audio CD)
All the way from The In Crowd on the 60's seemed to be THE decade for The Ramsey Lewis Trio. Even before this Ramsey himself was recording solo ventures with different musicians but he never did neglect the trio that helped him get his name out there. And at this point that trio consists of Ramsey on piano and fender rhodes electric,Cleaveland Eaton Jr on bass and of course Maurice White himself on drums-with occasional guitar support from Phil Upchurch. Now Earth Wind & Fire were merely a gestating concept in the mind of "Reese" at this point. All the same there were many ideas that Maurice baught to the table at this particular point that began to alter some of the musical priorities of Ramsey's trio. It was at this point that Maurice began to really make it clear to Ramsey his concept. While the pianist didn't take his drummer's grandiose sounding claims very seriously early on,even he must have seen the changes coming by this point because they are there for all to hear.
"If You've Got It,Flaunt It" will definately tear the roof off in any situation in terms of the slow grinding late 60's funk-jazz. Ramsey's noted Chicago soul-jazz piano style really puts Cleaveland's bass right and Maurice's drums right up the head of the class. On the covers "Wandering Rose" and "My Cherie Amour" you'll hear a trio making the most out of three instruments-interpreting the melody strongly in it's original pop context but going into some funky riffing after the first refrain, something of a Lewis trademark as it turned out. That funk also makes itself present on the strong "Do What You Wanna" and "Bold And Black". "Opus#5" draws a stronger jazz chord, with some harmonic styles similar to some things I've heard from Coltrane in the past. At least, his more soulful side anyway. Maurice's "Uhuru" is one tune that really indicates the changes in priorities. With an afrocentric polyrhythms it's definately proto EWF-with a Kalimba based melody Maurice would return to with EWF over twelve years later on their "Mizar" interlude from their Powerlight album. The album concludes with the quieter "Cecile" and a reprise of the opener. Staying within the basic structure of Ramsey's sound, this album also has looks very much to a future of at least one member of the trio at this point. In a few short years Ramsey Lewis,by that time a solo artist would make the trip to Columbia records and actually enjoy an enormous measure of creative and commercial success. One thing to be said for sure-even from this point to today Ramsey has never left Chicago, either physically or musically and it shows. Even on this highly transtional music you can hear him retaining the same sound that made the trio even when the basic rhythms and instrumental sounds were undergoing such dramatic changes. Just because ones music is moving on doesn't mean an individual cannot keep their own musicaly personality. And on this album Ramsey proves that in abundance. In fact he and his trio give ten excellent examples for all to listen to and enjoy!
