Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Spiritual Beggars are basically a reversion to true rock roots. Although this is no-way a retrogression of musical techniques. They offer intelligent and burnished pieces of euphony, that come across like a junkie of groove. In other words a musical drug, an addictive blend of severity and harmony. The second opus released by the trio was ‘Another Way to Shine’. Again here the guys showed a love for all things tinted by their favorite decade. It also showed a maturity in their song writing, but now so much as to ignore the rawness and ferocity of their debut. Features 9 tracks. Pinnacle. 2004. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars ITS GRREEAATT!, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Another Way to Shine (Audio CD)
Ok this cd is hard to get but believe me it is worth the effort the songs are clever and trippy without delving too much into the stoner rock category and sticking with a much better desert rock label the best original desert rock band i have heard since kyuss that is not a kyuss spin off. a must buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal, August 28, 2006

4 Stars = Classic

Spiritual Beggars are part of the "Stoner Rock" or "Stoner Metal" movement, which ever you prefer . While many of these bands are just poor retreads of Black Sabbath & other 70's heavy metal, Spiritual Beggars seem to have a real affinity for the 70's & are several cuts above the typical "Stoner" band.

"Another Way to Shine" is the only album I have of theirs. It is a sincere & even inspired recording that traces its self back to the 70's, not to just mimic the heavy metal of that era, Spiritual Beggars seem to be able to take the style somewhere & even add their own brand to it. If I was to make a comparison of latter day bands that expanded & updated the vocabulary & sound of the 70's, it would be Soundgarden that I would compare Spiritual Beggars to, at least on "Another Way to Shine."

My favorite cut off "Another Way to Shine" would be the gargantuan riff monger, "Blind Mountain." Here Spiritual Beggars borrow heavily from Black Sabbath, Budgie, & even Kansas from "Carry on Wayward Son," to concoct what I can only describe as progressive (but not to progressive) "Stoner Rock" if their is such an animal. "Blind Mountain" is filled with killer, but familiar hooks that dig in deep to that gray matter. Lead singer "Spice' (just Spice) cuts it through out the song & this album, reminding me of Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, but not quite as commanding. Still Spice's voice makes all the songs on this album ring of integrity, & sincerity.

I understand that Spiritual Beggars have even better albums awaiting my ears, though some are a little pricey, I think I'll be checking this bands catalog out?

So, for all you who haven't heard this: get your act together and buy it NOW! Brilliant songs and lyrics. Ludwig Witt is superb on the drums.
