Editorial Reviews

Review

One of the oldest and most respected Italian black metal bands arrives Stateside with an epic, intensely ferocious new album!

Highlights include the stunning opener The Serpent s Nemeton and the guitar chugging symphony In The Sixth Tower plus a brilliant cover of Bathory s One Road To Asa Bay!

In addition to the masterful guitar work of Opera IX founder Ossian, Anphisbena features extraordinary use of classical instruments such as cellos, harps, woodflutes, bodhran, uillieann pipe

Previous Opera IX albums have sold more than 15,000 copies each!

Opera IX has been active for many years in the scene and are perhaps one of the oldest italian bands still alive The band impresses with an incredibly matured sound, mixing both cold, esoteric atmospheres and aggression. And now, after the worldwide acclaim that greeted their previous albums, 2000 s The Black Opera (over 15.000 copies sold) and 2002 s Maleventum, Opera IX return with a brand new epic metal masterpiece, Anphisbena. The album introduces two new members, M the Bard on vocals and Dalamar on drums, who join long time members Ossian (guitar), Vlad (bass) and Lunaris (keyboards).

Anphisbena was recorded at Only-Music Studio in Italy, an unusual studio for metal bands that granted them an extra wide and clean acoustic. The album in fact features various takes of cellos, harp, woodflutes, bodhran, uillieann pipe and lyric female vocals.

As with every Opera IX album, also Anphisbena comes with a deep and extra worked lyrical concept: Anphisbena, namely The Cult of the Bi-Headed Serpent. Worth a mention is the incredible cover they made for BATHORY's "One Road To Asa Bay". --Cleopatra Records --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great comeback..., May 26, 2008
This review is from: Anphisbena (Audio CD)
Many fans thought after ex-vocalist Cadaveria's departure, Opera IX would be finally laid back to the grave. Fortunatly for most die-hard fans like myself, this was not the case. No, my friends herein Anphisbena we see Opera IX shifting from their classic black/death-doom to beautifully arranged symphonic blackened death metal with strong medieval, folk, and celtic influences, incorporating the use of acoustic guitars, traditional folk strings and percussions, and some melodic clean vocals. To my belief, Anphibena is something of a concept album, celebrating the long lost hereditary and folk craft of old, the eventual silent triumph of the celtic pagan societies over christian intruders. If you have a taste for any good folk metal, this album is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Do not get mixed up, June 8, 2005
This review is from: Anphisbena (Audio CD)
I purchased this album full price thinking it had the female vocalist from the Black Symphony album. It does not, it has a male. This is not a bad album, the production is very good but I was expecting something more along the lines of the newer one, with it catchy, fudgey, guitar riffs. If your looking for some of the best black, death metal with a chick singing then I highly recommend purchasing the Black Symphony. Only get anphisbena if you are a die hard opera ix fan like myself.
