This review is from: Ansata Tarot (Hardcover)
Most Tarot decks available today are a 're-hash' of the Universal Waite Tarot, or Crowley's Thoth deck. It's actually quite refreshing to see a deck that isn't based on either, but has taken a 'new direction.' That is what Bernd Mertz and Paul Struck did with this deck - they took the symbols and archetypes in a 'new direction.'

I'm not saying that you won't recognize these cards on first viewing; you will. The Magician is still carrying a wand and has all his elemental tools; the Wheel of Fortune still has the Sphinx, Typhon, and ol' Hermanubis surrounding the Wheel.

What's different about this deck is that the images are a little 'darker' than the norm (not many smiling faces to be seen in this deck), and they contain some images that could be disturbing (like all the snakes in the Hermit's card). But, as I said, I find these differences exciting and imaginative, and I happen to like the 'darker' aspects of this deck.

Another difference, and this one is more significant, is that Bernd Mertz (a highly respected astrologer from Germany) has given the cards astrological attributions that will surprise many of you. For instance, the Magician is astrologically linked to the Sun; and The Universe is astrologically linked to the Sign Taurus. This may sound strange and 'wrong' for some of you, but I assure you, a LOT of thought has gone into this deck, and if you have an astrological 'turn of mind' you will be intrigued by these cards, where the many symbols and details on each card will lead you to understand the archetypes as Mertz did.

If you are a Tarot Deck collector, as I am, I encourage you to look around on the internet for samples of the images of these cards (they aren't hard to find). I think that you will become entranced by this deck, as I did, and want one of your own. You won't be sorry.

PS: This deck contains the Major Arcana only, so don't buy them expecting all 78-80 cards - just a word to the wise.
