This is a good introductory text to Anselm Kiefer. The selection of images covers his entire career and includes most of the highlights. The text hits the biographical highlights while exploring the diverse influences and themes that make Kiefer such an interesting artist. Selected works are set out for special exploration. Nothing new to be added to the growing literature and biographical details of Kiefer's life and work, but this is to be expected in a text such as this. More important, the text is readable and (mostly) free of jargon. Some of the concepts and ideas in Kiefer's work beg further elaboration and an introductory text like this cannot cover the richness of meaning covered by the symbolic palette Kiefer uses. Curious readers will want to dive into other secondary literature's to know more. Phaidon's production quality is very good for this kind of introductory text, with the images well produced (albeit small). Recommended for anyone new to this important contemporary artist.

This is my first Phaidon Focus book and it is quite nice. It is hardcover, with a plastic dust-jacket and the images are very good quality. I buy a lot of Taschen 25 series books since they are similar in price, but this series is even better. I hope they make more, please.

If you know Kiefer then you also know all his works and books on him are pricey. This book is reasonably priced and has great images. It was paired with "Over your cities grass will grow" a documentary on his work in France, and together they made a great gift for my husband.
