5.0 out of 5 stars What happened?
I miss this AFI. I miss songs about jocks & mohawks. I miss them sampling 'Reservoir Dogs'. I miss the rebelliousness and the overall "F*** you!" attitude. I miss the days when it was hard to understand the lyrics. If you enjoy punk, and I mean REAL punk (not Good Charlotte), then you should buy this album. It's just awesome overall. Fast, crazy, chaotic...

AFI's debut album is a great deal different from their last few CDs. There is no traces of Goth or pop punk here, just straight up old school punk with some truly hilarious lyrics. The problem with this album is it's all the same, there's almost no variation, so it's good when you listen to just a few tracks (all of which are good) but put back to back it's impossible...

5.0 out of 5 stars A.Fine.Introduction, February 26, 2006

American Punk, the most antisocial style of music known to man yet very good when done properly. This album does just that. Powerful chords and raw aggression give this album a wonderful feel. Unlike much punk, A.F.I actually have skill as shown in the sudden changes of rhythm of Rizzo In The Box and the bass intros of Brownie Bottom Sundae and Cereal Wars. I have always hated music which goes on too long and there is no fear of that with this album. With most songs clocking in at around 1 and 1/2 minutes you don't get bored with the same song going on for ever and ever (Guns "n" Roses I'm looking at you). Everything about this album works when put together and I thoroughly reccomend it to be the sort of music to set on a loop and annoy the neighbours with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, but please realize, August 30, 2003
Dont listen to anyone who tells you this is AFI's debut album, it really isnt, their debut is called DORK, and its on vinyl, and is extremely rare. Any true afi knows that the first two albums are basically compilations of what they had done so far, and were just on an easier and more widely accepted format at the time.

That aside, heres the review...

This album is pure brilliance, its not every day a 15 year old EBHC band, hXc band, whatever you wanna call it, busts onto the scene, with the melodic songs that AFI has. At such early points in their youth, these guys can rock with the best of em. You'll find these songs quite simple, but very catchy, and easy to play on the guitar yourself, Many diehard fans of afi consider these songs to be some of AFI's greatest songs.

Some of the songs do have flaws, but their 15 years old, and inexperienced, what do you expect?

this is a great album, for anyone to own, especially hardcore likers, it will leave you wanting to scream "I may be 10 years old, but i still know whats up, i listen to the misfits everyday!" after your done listening...great record..>BUY IT

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool Stuff, April 24, 2000
Wow, Davey really grows on you. When I first listened to this, it sounded like alvin and the Chipmunks go hardcore, but I've gotten used to it. This disc is also easily the peak of bassit Geoff's songwriting career, which couple perfectly with Davey's insightful lyrics. For Tarintino fans, the cover is a take-off of the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack album cover, and most of the music could have fit seamlessly into the movie. A perfect buy for those who are first-time AFI listeners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, shows the roots of a great band., July 15, 2006
The afi featured in this album is actually pretty much a diffrent band than we see in later albums. afi stood for anthems for insubordinates while it later stands for a fire inside. there are two diffrent band members than later on. two diffrent members makes a big diffrence. for anyone who knows anything about punk, the only diffrence between operation ivy and rancid is two members, but they are very diffrent bands. so now that ive established this cd as a "diffrent band" ill say that this is a great album. truly fantastic. it is youth energy and teen angst in music form. it basically defines every teenage loser. haha its true though, and thats what makes it fun. yes this is a FUN album. thats the best way to describe it. davey sings about cereal, and wanting a mohawk, and not wanting to get up in the morning and stupid jocks, its very immature, but that immaturity is refreshing. when compared to black sails in the sunset, or the art of drowning, this album seems meak and irrelevent. afi later would go on to make creative music that would blow my mind, but this album is always something ill come back to, because its fun. theres nothing else to it. its fun fast and punk. so when you feel overwhelemed by afis later, more intense albums just pop this in, its simply a fun album to listen to.

AFI's debut album is a great deal different from their last few CDs. There is no traces of Goth or pop punk here, just straight up old school punk with some truly hilarious lyrics. The problem with this album is it's all the same, there's almost no variation, so it's good when you listen to just a few tracks (all of which are good) but put back to back it's impossible to get through the entire CD without a headache. The two standout tracks for me are "High School Football Hero" and the Classic "I Want a Mohawk but My Mom Won't Let Me Get One".
The music reminds me alot of MxPx's debut CD "Pokinatcha", but the lyrics are alot more similar to the Offspring. Definitely a good CD if you wanna see where the band started and you're already a fan, but if you're new to AFI and want to backtrack from Sing the Sorrow or Decemberunderground I recomend either Black Sails in the Sunset or the All Hallows EP instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, August 13, 2001
By
This was my first AFI album, and overall I think it's great. Personally I liked Art of Drowning a bit better *ducks bricks from oldschool AFI fans*, and All Hallow's EP is godly, but this definitely isn't bad at all--hence my four stars. It is different from other AFI music I've heard since, in that some of the songs have humorous themes (like I Wanna Mohawk and Highschool Football Hero), but it's all fast, hard punk rock. Davey's high-pitched voice is here as always, giving them a totally unique sound.

AFI is a great band; I don't think I can honestly say this is their best album, not the "If you only buy one AFI album, make it this", but if you like the band, it's good stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Answer That And Stay Fashionable!, July 10, 2006

AFI-Answer That And Stay Fashionable *****

What can you say about such an amazing album as Answer That And Stay Fashionable without sounding like your blowing smoke at people? It's a hard question that has been largely pondered. Well maybe Ill wing it. The songs here are simply better then any other AFI ever made resulting in the very best album the band ever made. The mix of hardcore, hardcore punk and straight up hard rock work out perfectly. Havoc's vocals are at his best here in my opinion. The guitar is fantastic as is the rumbling bass lines. The drumming is less prominent through out the album as on others but still is heard and gets his point across which is the sign of a true extraordinary drummer. The albums is everything a good punk album should be loud fast and fierce, and each track is just as good as the next.

`Two Of A Kind' starts off the album with a fantastically catchy chorus. One hell of a song to start off the album. `Half Empty Bottle' is next with its great guitar riff and solo driving the song from start to finish. Havoc's vocal delivery is excellent here. `Yurf Rendermein' is one of AFI's all time best songs, it is truly a classic in their musical cannon. Really the same exact song as on Very Proud Of Ya but that's alright its so good it should be released twice. `I Want A Mohawk(But Mom Won't Let Me)' is another AFI classic. This to many the bands signature song. It's everything a little punk kid wants and does. The guitar intro alone is classic. `Brownie Bottom Sundae' starts and its full speed ahead. A great song but nothing too special other then the amazing bass line through out the song and the nice guitar solo. `The Checkered Demon' is super fast, one of the fastest songs ever heard. `Cereal Wars' contains one of the all time greatest bass lines ever! The lyrics are a personal favorite and it is a really great song, one of the best on the album. `The Mother In Me' aside from having a really obscure title is a truly great song, one of the best on the album in fact. `Rizzo In The Box' is a very good song, quite simply put. Lots of tempo changes and lots of great moments through out. Another shining moment on the album. Kung-Fu Devil is another song that features a clip from the movie Reservoir Dogs, then goes into a killer guitar riff and awesome song all around, one of the standout's on the album.'Your Name' contains a great chanting chorus "No More No More" which will for sure be stuck in your head. `Ny-Quil' aside from having some of my all time favorite lyrics and subject matter also has very great guitar playing. A personal favorite off the album. `Don't Make Me Ill' also contains another clip from Reservoir Dogs and then goes into another great song by the band. This is my favorite song on the album personally. A song all true AFI fans love really. `Open Your Eyes' Is old school hardcore at its best with lots of complicated rhythms that make this song really stand out on the album. `Highschool Football Hero' closes the album and does so very well. One of their best songs closes their best album, they couldn't have don't it better. After the song there is about 12 minutes of total silence and then a clip of the band speaking, pretty cool way to end the album.

Reservoir Dogs is one of the great movies in American history and so it's no doubt that an album made after the movie would be just as good, especially when AFI does it. For anyone who wants to listen to the real AFI please check out Answer That And Stay Fashionable it is truly the bands best album and one of the best albums in punk history so to anyone who is interested this is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars AFI's first album is a worthy purchase, but..., April 5, 2006
It's a little short :( The album clocks in at about 28 minutes. The plus side, though, is that it's an excellent 28 minutes of punk music that is very enjoyable and fun.

These songs are very different from anything AFI made after this and "Very Proud of Ya"; they are quick, fun, energetic, and have silly (though not immature) lyrics. Compare this with, let's say the Offspring, who have immature lyrics, screachy singing (sometimes), and have a few weak songs on each album. Note that you may not care for Davey's (AFI's singer) voice on this album and I highly recommend you sample before you buy.

So if you aren't really into AFI's music, perhaps you should check out "Very Proud of Ya" first because it is much longer. Both albums have very similar kinds of songs, so if you really like "Very Proud of Ya", don't hesitate to buy this album. One more thing, there are two bonus songs that are on the vinyl version of the album. One of these (Self-Pity) is definately worth a download if you wind up really liking this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love them all but this introduced me to it, December 29, 2005

I am 13. I dont listen to the utter crap that is good charlotte and that other poser bull. But this how ever... My cousin got me to listen to afi and i sampled a few songs from a few albums, how ever it wasnt until i got to this album that i got into them. For those of you who think STS is whiney and emo think again. i suggest you look up the meaning of the album then re-listen to it. ATaSF has a few highlights in my opinion that are better than some others. Cereal wars is one of them. Posibly the most sarcastic song on the cd, its a must hear for anyone into punk. I wanna mohawk is the most whiney, yet posibly the funniest song on the album. My Second favorite song on this album is High School Footbal hero. Definitly the catchiest beat, and the easiest to listen to repeatedly its one of the best songs by the band not just on this album. Lastly, is the vinyl only song self pity. By Far my Favorite. Funny message, serious sounding, catchy beat, and easy to listen to over and over. I'm not sure if its availible on this cd version, but its worth it to look for else where as an mp3 if its not. This is a tie for my favorite afi album (tied with very proud of ya) and i would recomend it for any punk fan. i would listen to this before sts so as not to be dissapointed at first like i was. STS will grow on you after learning its message and i would recomend all of the afi cds mentioned. the others are good too but in my mind these are the essentials. 5 of 5 easily
