Read this book!,

This review is from: Answering Their Country's Call: Marylanders in World War II (Hardcover)
For starters, every Marylander should buy this book! I have never said anything like that before. And it's not just because I have an uncle and one friend/neighbor in this book. It's because these chapters are written and these stories are told so well. (And the interviews were carried out just in time.) There is also wonderful diversity represented here--of race, background, military arm, theatre of operations, rank, etc. Many of these stories are quite harrowing. Typically my responses were: I don't think I could have done that. And: Thank you--thank you--for your service.
Of course, as sometimes happens, my other thought was that I should have done this book. It was a great idea, well and faithfully executed.

This review is from: Answering Their Country's Call: Marylanders in World War II (Hardcover)
There are so many little stories about the war in this book and just as the author says in the introduction I am so glad they were captured in print before they were lost forever. I read a lot about personal war experiences and this book has so many real-life stories told so well it felt like I was there right with the men during their battles and even during the down times just being young men and women in a very difficult time. The story about the man who survived four years as a prisoner in a Japanese camp was just amazing...and flying along with the B-17 pilots over Germany...how did they do this with such modesty and stoicism....inspiring. Thank you to all the veteran in this book! Gary.
