About the Author

George Fredrick Mueller (1805 – 1898), a Christian evangelist and Director of orphanages in Bristol, England, cared for 10,024 orphans in his life. He was well-known for providing an education to the children under his care, to the point where he was accused of raising the poor above their natural station in life. The work of Mueller and his wife with orphans began in 1836 with the preparation of their own home at 6 Wilson Street, Bristol for the accommodation of thirty girls. Soon after, three more houses were furnished growing the total of children cared for to 130. In 1845, as growth continued, Mueller decided that a separate building designed to house 300 children was necessary, and in 1849, at Ashley Down, Bristol, that home opened. The architect commissioned to draw up the plans asked if he might do so gratuitiously. By 1870, more than 2,000 children were being accommodated in five homes. Through all this, Mueller never made requests for financial support, nor did he go into debt, even though the five homes cost over £100,000 to build. Many times, he received unsolicited food donations only hours before they were needed to feed the children, further strengthening his faith in God. Every morning after breakfast there was a time of Bible reading and prayer, and every child was given a Bible upon leaving the orphanage. The children were dressed well and educated - Mueller even employed a school inspector to maintain high standards. In fact, many claimed that nearby factories and mines were unable to obtain enough workers because of his efforts in securing apprenticeships, professional training, and domestic service positions for the children old enough to leave the orphanage. In 1871 an article in The Times stated that since 1836, 23,000 children had been educated in the schools and very many thousands had been educated in other schools at the expense of the orphanage. The article also states that since its origin, 64,000 Bibles, 85,000 Testaments and 29,000,000 religious books had been issued and distributed. Other expenses included the support of 150 missionaries.

I read this book years ago while I was just a teenager. Just today I turned 30. Since the time I was a young teenager I have had a burden to help troubled children. The book only fueled my desire to work with children. I am also a devout Christian and know the tremendous power that prayer can bring into one's life. It is 2:32am where I am at and although it has been over 15 years since I read this book, I woke up after several dreams tonight with George Mueller's life on my mind. I can't rest until I know even more about George Mueller's life. I need direction in the way that I am to serve. The book is that powerful. More importantly, the testimony of Mr. Mueller's faith and dedication have inspired me to commit my life to the service of God. I hope you are inspired as well.

George Muller was an 19th century Christian leader in England who took the Lord's command to look after orphans and widows in their distress very seriously. He build and maintained orphanages caring for thousands of kids over time never once asking any person for a penny to support the work. He also built works around Bible and Gospel tract distribution and foreign missions with the same dependence solely on the Lord. The book is essentially a collection of Muller's journal entries with some corresponding background to help explain the circumstances surrounding the entries. It is extremely well done and being Kindle free makes it even better. The book is clearly worth spending some $$ on.

Throughout the book I was repeatedly moved by the intensity of this man's faith. Although he repeatedly said he did not believe he had any special gift of faith, I don't know whether I could aspire to count on God the way this brother did, even in the direst of circumstances. Journal entries covering six decades of work in building and sustaining orphanages provide a well rounded view of how his faith remained consistent over time.

Here is one of his purpose statements for recording these things for us:

Now, if I, a poor man, simply by prayer and faith, obtained without asking any individual, the means for establishing and carrying on an Orphan-House, there would be something which, with the Lord's blessing, might be instrumental in strengthening the faith of the children of God, besides being a testimony to the consciences of the unconverted, of the reality of the things of God.

More than once in the book he professes great thanks for the many trials that he endured because they increased his faith and dependence on God.

George Mueller's life's work was to have G-d glorified, by living a life of total dependance on Him. One of Mr. Mueller's chief rules was never to tell people the needs of the orphanages, but only to ask G-d for help. This book is a collection of exerpts, a kind of journal, that describes the wonderful ways in which God did indeed answer Mr. Mueller's prayers by providing for thousands of orphans often on a meal to meal basis for over 40 years! The powerful ways that G-d provided for each need will touch every reader's heart. It will give encouragement to fellow Christians and challenge the skeptical. I have never read a more powerful account of Jesus' faithfulness to His children and would strongly reccomend this book to all people.

I had a copy of this book years ago but gave it away and somewhat regretted that since this book was a testimony of the faith walk. It reads like a journal of situations Mr. Mueller encountered and how the Lord delivered him out of them ALL, and how ALL of his needs were supplied. Mr. Mueller took care of probably hundreds of thousands of orphans by Only depending on the Lord. It shows how good the Lord is and how well he takes care of his children who trust him. This book is formatted well and has a active TOC, and it's free. What a blessing!

I'm about to begin reading George Mueller's Autobiography. Answers to prayer is an amazing testimony to the power of prayer in one man's life, and it shows how every believer can appropriate the promises of God for themselves.

The product is worthwhile as it comes across well in the Kindle addition. There are some, few, misspellings ;) in the book but none that take away the impact. Concerning the message? What a great little book that proves much of the promise that when someone prays in earnest, God listens and it touches His heart. Muller has a honest and forthright approach. Needs promote prayer. If there is no need, there is no prayer. Let this book bless you and turn you into a prayer person seeking for God to bless others.

This book is a spiritual autobiography of a man who ran multiple orphanages and a school by solely trusting in God to provide the support. George Mueller never asked any individual for money. This book will encourage the believer to place all of your cares and burdens on the Lord. The reader will be challenged to seek after God for who He is and not for what He gives. It will help take your prayer life to a new level. You can easily read it in two or three sittings.

2011 UPDATE: I loved this book so much that the writer in me produced a paraphrased edition! If you find the story of George Mueller inspiring, you will want to read it in today's language. SIMPLE TRUST, SIMPLE PRAYERS Simple Trust, Simple Prayers: Life-Changing Lessons From The Journals of George Mueller is the same story, just written for today's readers. From the early feedback already coming in, reading it in this form is making an impact on people's lives.

I first read this book about 30 years ago, as a young, new believer in Christ. Then I wanted to share it with my husband of 2 years. He is Jewish, and came to know Christ 4 years ago, so all things Christian are new to him. I remembered this book, and how much it taught me about prayer, so searched for it.

We read it together, aloud (the best way!). George Mueller served God by searching for a way to visibly, tangibly demonstrate that God is actively able and willing to answer prayer. Of course, Mueller teaches us a whole lot about what that prayer is like, and how it all works.

God is not really interested in, and has no obligation, to answer my usual prayer requests -- which are mostly things to make my life more comfortable. He is, however, very interested in things that glorify HIM!

Reading the book again... again changed my life.

Don't read it unless you're ready for some big change!
