Review
The Ant Heap is the first publication in English of the major early feminist novels Margit Kaffka. She's also a poet, critic, and short story writer from central Europe in the early decades of the 20th century. The Ant Heap is a story about the intrigues and society of a convent -- a microcosm of the greater society around it. Originally published in 1917, The Ant Heap is both witty and poignant in its evocation of the power struggles at the convent (circa 1900), the clash between tradition and change, and the romantic attachments both "behind the walls" and with boys living outside. Charlotte Franklin has done a very skillful translation for this English edition and provides an insightful introduction readers will appreciate in its own right. -- Midwest Book Review
