This book covers David Freeland Parmelee's research over a 13 year period in Antarctica. The book is filled with his illustrations and maps of the research areas he studied. There is a wealth of information about the birds and their habits and habitat and lists of observations and recoveries. All of the families and species are covered in some detail as a normal field guide but interspersed with maps of locations where they were seen or where the research was being done at the time, some of the maps show recovery range or dispersal and a few are true range maps. Many photographs accompany the text and artwork plus several full color plates of his artwork grace the middle of the book. This is not a guide but a research tool and coffee table book. I'd never take this into the field but it contains information that any Antarctic bird lover will want to have.
