5.0 out of 5 stars Another step forward for the Prayer Chain; simply brilliant., December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Antarctica (Audio CD)
This most recent studio release from the "Chain" is really a gift to its small, but very devoted fan base. This 14 track album contains unreleased songs from the "Mercury" sessions as well as tracks from their December 31st show in California. This time the Chain moves away from the Mercury album percussion based theme and crank out some tracks that simply groove. "Chalk" and "Loverboy"are extremely catchy love songs, while "Friend or Foe" almost demands to be played at loud volumes with windows down driving on a sunny day. Here Eric Campuzzao's bass line drives the home the song. The "live" cuts are equally as impressive. Taken mostly from the "Shawl" and "Mercury" albums, it starts off with a grooving version of "Wronde" and ends with a beautiful, melodic version of "The Hollow." If you even slightly enjoy Prayer Chain's music, THIS IS A MUST HAVE. If you have heard about this band and are wondering about a first album to buy; this is the one. THe live tracks gives you a preview of their earlier brillant work and the studio songs are simply outstanding. My only gripe is that they left off "The Other Side of Heaven" and "Lose Yourself Tonight", which they recorded during the Mercury sessions and are very hard to get a hold of. Still, a awesome album.

4.0 out of 5 stars hmm, August 31, 2001

the first half of this album is absolutely incredible. the songs are pure noise, yet still poppy. like a cross between la monte young and billy joel. it's as far beyond their album "mercury" as mercury is beyond "shawl." i can't stress enough how visionary it is. however, the second half, the "live" stuff, is disappointing. the only thing that saves the 2nd half is the drumming and the guitar work. the vocals are horrible.

As long as you skip the first track, this is up there with Rattle & Hum as one of the all-time GREAT live (although only the second half of the album is a live concert) albums. The first half of the album contains songs that were cut from the Oh, so magnificent Mercury album, including such gems as "Chalk" and "Friend or Foe", I just wish that they had left "Antarctica" off of the CD, but it's easy enough to just click through that tone-deaf nuisance of a song. They obviously weren't taking their music seriously when they recorded that one. The live section contains some of the best performances ever. Unfortunately, it was also their last live performance as an "officially touring" band. They have reconveined for a few special shows over the last couple of years, but nothing on the level of "Lead Donkey's, Dead Donkey's, Dead Donkey's in a White-Wine Sauce, and the inevitable split-up." Close enough to U2 that U2 fans will like it, but far enough distanced from them to be a totally different sound.
