Good Antenna March 16, 2012

I'm going to compare this to the ClearStream4 antenna, which I also purchased. The ClearStream4 Antenna was a lot more difficult to assemble having more pieces. The instructions were not the greatest either. The DB4-E basically came almost pre-assembled, just needing to connect two pieces. Though the ClearStream4 did a decent job of picking up stations, the DB4-E antenna gave me another bar on signal strength on most of my channels. Between the two antennas, I would definately recommend the DB4-E over the ClearStream4 antenna.

I had previously purchased an Antennas Direct DB2 antenna that initially worked great. However, at certain times of the year, especially during windy or stormy weather and solar flare activity, the reception on a few channels would fade in and out. It was very disconcerting. But because of my confidence in the quality of products from Antennas Direct, I decided to upgrade to the DB4e to see if the problem could be resolved.

When I received the DB4e, I mounted it in my skylight (see photo), in the spot where the DB2 had been. The DB4e is more than twice as large as the DB2, so I wasn't sure if a skylight installation was going to be practical at all. If it did not work well there, I would have reluctantly mounted it on the roof, where I'm certain it would pick up even more channels.

Well, it works great in the skylight and my reception has never been better. I now get 119 channels on my living room TV and 130 on my bedroom TV (I have no idea why they don't pick up the same number of channels, but they don't). I am 21 miles away from the transmitters. The signal strength on 90% of the channels is 92 or higher, while the lowest signal strength on the very weakest channels is still over 75. More importantly, unlike the DB2, the diagnostics on my TV indicate "0 errors," along with very impressive "signal to noise" ratios. I have not noticed any fade or wavering in any of the diagnostics at all. If I ever do notice it, I will update this review.

One other note, the DB4e comes almost fully assembled. All you have to do is remove a couple of rubber bands and cardboard used for internal packing, install two metal sleeves and tighten their respective screw/bolts/nuts, and connect the coaxial cable. That's it. It could not have been easier.

I highly recommend it!

I owned the Antennas Direct DB4 for roughly 3 years and was very happy with its overall performance. Its roof mounted(outside) on the J-30 mast and it held up very well to some of the nasty winds and weather we get here in upstate, NY. Anyway, I had my roof done so I figured Id give the DB4 to my bro-inlaw and buy the latest unit, the DB4e. With a limited amount of testing I feel like the general performance of the DB4e is *slightly* better for channels that I was receiving already. We had a few fringe channels that appear to come in a little better now and actually stay clean the whole time so thats an improvement. However, we didnt gain any new channels so this new version(DB4e) is NOT a revelation or anything. People are probably wondering if they should upgrade or not. I say for most users its not neccessary to upgrade if your current DB4(older model) is working well and you are happy. I dont think this one will do a heckuva lot. If there are some channels that you wished came in better then the upgrade is probably worth it.

Lets summarize that:

Its WORTH the upgrade IF - certain channels do get picked up by your current DB4(old model) but the reception is a little dodgy at times or you need that little extra boost to have it stay clean and clear the whole time.

Its NOT WORTH the upgrade IF - You are hoping to pull in channels that you never received before. This new unit wont likely help.

The DB4e is larger than the orignal by a decent amount but still works with the same J-mount mast. Build quality is about the same which I always felt was pretty good. Of course if you dont currently have any antenna or have an older crappy one, by ALL means get the DB4e - its a good product that has always served me right and its held up well in the weather too. Its priced right too, IMO.

Id also suggest trying to mount it outside as high as you can. That alone makes a HUGE difference with any antenna. Good Luck!
