Book Description

January 26, 2006
Isolated from the modern world by thousands of kilometers of bright blue Pacific Ocean, the quaint little Chilean island of La Desesperacion had been a perfect haven for those who sought escape from the mind-numbing pace of urban progress and treasured the unmolested beaches and pristine scenery of the remote getaway. Lurking beneath the surface, however, was a diabolical monster of geological proportions. One that sank ships, ridiculed science, and tested the faith of true believers as it held the entire population of La Desesperacion within its fiery grasp. Then there was the volcano. The Good Earth? Hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars All hell breaks out on island, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Antevastatio Militis (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
ANTEVASTATIO MILITIS (ANTE [PRIOR TO] + VASTATIO [ DESTRUCTION/DEVASTATION] + MILITIS =[WARRIOR] -- I had to research the Latin) is a horror story involving strange happenings on the fictional island of La Desesperacion located within the South Pacific Ocean off of the coast of Chile. While not necessarily a cerebral horror story, I found this work very entertaining and the plot line flows rather well. The characters are very much human and each battles their own inner demons as well as the book's primary antagonist.

Unlike many novels which seem to have been written during lengthy periods, ANTEVASTATIO MILITIS seems to hold true to its original plot line that builds effectively throughout the story. For example, a simple conversation between two scientific assistants answers the fundamental question of why the protagonists have devoted so much of their time to the primary project of the story -- I won't destroy the plot for subsequent readers.

Yes, this is a horror story, but it is much more than that. There is a strong religious undertow to the story, but one that does not cram religion down one's throat. Even the character of Padre Guillen is made out to be more an amateur scientist than a practicing priest. Don't let the religion scare you, however, as there is a satisfactory conclusion to the whole story that should suffice to entertain those who might believe as well as those who just want to read a unique story.

I considered giving ANTEVASTATIO MILITIS only four stars because there were some minor editing gaffs that occasionally appeared. However, I have seen far worse editing in 'five star' novels from your major players so this shouldn't stop anyone who is seeking an enjoyable read and I held to my original decision.

This is definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in a unique storyline bridging science and religion. It would be nice to see a movie made from this novel but I am satisified with the written version.
