The Only One,
By aikanae (scottsdale, az) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anthelios XL sunblock - Melt-In CreamSPF 60 - 3oz - with Mexoryl (Misc.)
Amazing. Mexoyrl was available in the rest of the world for 13-17 years before being approved by the FDA - with no additional testing, no explanation for the delays (FYI Most of the world have more restrictive regulations on cosmetics v. U.S. regs). Mexoyrl is available in many products elsewhere as a generic (along with >5 other newer sunscreen developments). But because it's "new" in the U.S. the patent starts all over again here and some products that have it as an ingredient elsewhere, have disappeared entirely from store shelves in the U.S.
What does that mean? It means I now pay MORE for Mexoyrl products than I did importing it illegally (which was never strictly enforced anyway). It has become LESS available, not more. For decades people petitioned the FDA for Mexoyrl, including dermatologists because there is no equal -not even close. The ingredients currently used in sunscreens against UVA (read cancer-causing rays) are not stable and may even be harmful to your skin. Consumer Reports called them snake oils, class action lawsuits were filed against 9 major manufactueres including coppertone, johnson, neutrogenia. Mexoyrl is 99% effective, stable in the sun (not photosensitive), does not react with minerals (like in tints that leave older ingredients ineffective or harmful) and like I said, nothing else comes close in the U.S. The backlash after it's approval has lead many well-meaning consumer type organizations that don't do their own testing to over-estimate the claims from the snake oil manufacturers. The latest FDA rating standards do not rate what the effectiveness is 10 min. after it's applied, in the sun. They are almost meaningless. I have life-threatening skin cancer. This is no joke and the discrepancy between the truth and propaganda is costing lives. No sunscreen is a free pass to be in the sun, esp. during the worst times when the sun is closest. The sun now is not the same as what I was exposed to growing up. Sunscreen is not the first line of protection, shade is. There are very cheap laundry additives that can raise a tshirt rating from a 4 to a 50, plus being stable in the sun. That's better than a cream. Something is not better than nothing when exposure to the sun is increased (evidence for the lawsuit included rates of skin cancer were increasing despite use of sunscreens). Skin cancer is expensive, disfiguring and can be life threatening. What people do at 20, they will pay for at 40. The ages are lowering along with the epidemic growth. Save thousands in wrinkle treatments, anti-aging products and makeup by protecting your skin now. Sun protection added to tinted makeup is a joke. It's physically impossible just like claims to be 'waterproof' or all day protection. Mexoryl is 99% effective screening UVA rays. If you import your own then you can get others that work with tinted makeup.

i am on hormone replacement which renders my skin photosensitive. no matter how much of any other sunblock i ever used, i would still get melasma (dark spots).then i heard about this product which contains mexoryl, the gold standard of sun protection in europe for years.
it works! plus, as a bonus, it moisturizes just brilliantly. my skin glows.

I spent 11 days in Aruba without burning! The protection was what "the doctor ordered". My skin was always moist and silky smooth. This is the best protection I have ever used.

I have fair, combination, sun-sensitive skin. I used the daily Anthelios Spf 15 lotion, and liked it, so I thought i would try this product to protect my face during the summer. It just makes my face too shiny and it makes my hair stick to my neck. This is probably a great lotion for swimming or serious sun exposure, but I think it is a little too heavy for everyday use.

Price Error,

This excellent product costs around $ 25 for 100ml (ca 3 oz) tube. The price here of almost $ 80 for 3 oz must be an error, unless you get three tubes. First enquire with the marketplace seller.
Make sure you get the Anthelios XL, which contains both Mexoryl SX AND Mexoryl XL. Together they offer superior UVA/UVB protection. If a product only says "contains Mexoryl", chances are, it will only contain the UVA filter Mexoryl SX.

John Stossel did a report on this state of the art sunscreen that has been used all over the world, but not FDA approved for the USA. I have been looking for it for 2 years since the report. It really works well. I'm a Physical Education teacher and I spend many hours outside in sunny California. This works well; and it feels really good on my face.

Great Product and difficult to find locally. This sunscreen is very useful especially if you have sun sensitive skin which has a tendency for discoloration with sun exposure. Thanks Amazon!!

Sure, it's a little expensive, but it works. Love the 15 for moisturizing protection every day, but this is the stuff for boating, beaching, etc. It's heavier than the 15, but feels better than most other sunscreens available and gives better protection.

Excelent. This sunscreen is not greasy and does not ball up like others do when you try to wear them under foundation. It is protecting my skin from the Southern California sun. I'd tan right through other foundations unless they were really heavy and greasy ones.

I have been using the Anthelios XL spf60 creme on my face for several months. I have lupus and live at a high altitude, so need serious sun protection that is appropriate for sensitive skin. I was using Fallene - Total Block SPF 60 Tinted Oil-Free Cover-Up 2 Fl. oz. / 59 ml, which was a great matte foundation, but I seem to have developed an allergy to it. The Anthelios is not as greasy as some, and I find that I can wear it under makeup, as long as I let it soak in and dry a bit, then lightly dab the shine off my t-zone before applying Jane Iredale PurePressed Mineral Powder with a loose brush. I opt for Vanicream Sunscreen Sensitive Skin SPF 60 - 4 oz on other areas of exposed skin because it is cheaper (I found it at my local Walgreens pharmacy). Vanicream is way too greasy for the face, but it is also effective and leaves no white cast/smudges.
