3.0 out of 5 stars Good solid sound, but not my favorite black uhuru release
I am a pretty big fan of Black Uhuru during the Puma era. I did prefer Junior Reid over Michael Rose, but I also love how Puma adds the flavor in the music no matter with whom she sang. This cd is a pretty solid release and I rate it high. Not in MY top ten of all reggae albums, but somewhere in the middle. I would rate several Israel Vibration, Burning Spear, Culture,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bam!, June 17, 2007

This is hard-hitting reggae at it's peak, with great, strong vocals and harmony, solid lyrics, and Sly and Robbie backing the whole thing. All killer songs, some less "heavy" (like Party In Session), but hey, cut them some slack. They kick!

Amazingly deep, dubwise production from Sly & Robbie plus the great singing from this edition of Uhuru plus their strongest set of songs. I've heard people complain about the mix, but to me this still sounds state-of-the-art 18 years after.

Several years ago I had heard the Anthem cassette shortly after it came out, that was the first time I had heard of the group Black Uhuru. The songs are incredible, the singer's voice is amazing. I highly recommmend purchasing Anthem!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good solid sound, but not my favorite black uhuru release, December 23, 2001

I would rate several Israel Vibration, Burning Spear, Culture, Tosh, Marley, Bunny, Abyssinians, Don Carlos, Lee Perry, Congos, Ijahman, etc...above this one. I do, however, rate a song or two on this release well among the top of the list of all reggae songs. I love BLACK UHURU ANTHEM. Such a beautiful song with such a nice mellow and wonderful sound. I'm sure it is worth the price of the cd alone, but Bull in The Pen and Solidarity also rank high and make it more worth the purchase. The other songs, in my opinion, keep it from rising to the top of my list. They are good, but not great.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the 5 best reggae albums in history, July 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Anthem (Audio CD)
Ground breaking, breathtaking, Anthem is an album for the ages. In the Reagan 80's, Michael Rose's anti-imperialist moralizing cut like a switchblade through the right-wing culture of the day. Robbie Shakespeare is as radical a bass guitar stylist as Larry Graham, Jaco, Sting, or anyone else you care to name. But most of all, the Rose/Puma/Duckie vocal juggernaut is simply stunning -- the true successors to Marley/Tosh/Bunny. Highly recommeded.

4.0 out of 5 stars Correction to Amazon review, June 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Anthem (Audio CD)
I'm sure I'm not the only one to catch this mistake: On the first review (by Amazon) the last paragraph says that the song "Somebody's Watching You" is on the Chill Out CD. Although I agree with the reviewer that this is a weak attempt at a reggae crossover pop tune, the song is on Anthem, NOT on Chill Out!

3.0 out of 5 stars Just Try It!, March 6, 2007
By
This review is from: Anthem (Audio CD)
I love this Black Uhuru line-up - Michael's distinctive lead with Puma and Duckie's sizzling background vocals are pure magic. 7 great songs on this CD, with Party Next Door being my only throw away, make this a must have for Black Uhuru fans. Let me not forget that Sly and Robbie are on this joint, too!
