Editorial Reviews

With arching melodies, epic guitar riffs and rhythms inciting you to put your hands in the air, anthems give us a soundtrack to life's defining moments. And for Hanson, their sixth studio album, Anthem, marks the beginning of their third decade of making music together. Anthem is an album that celebrates the power of music to ignite passion and bring people together.

After being a Hanson fan since 1997 I've not LOVED everything they have ever done. In fact, I was not in love with "Shout It Out", but being a fan, I always manage to like enough to continuously support this amazing, underrated band.

I'm still floored at the obvious growth and change that I see in "Anthem" from the last album. The lyrics have improved (my biggest problem with SIO). the music is infectious...still Hanson, but better, louder, rockier. This album will sound AMAZING live, and I think they put a lot of thought into that when they were making the album. I can't wait to experience some of the new music at a concert either, that is where I feel they are absolutely at their best.

I don't think I've loved an album THIS MUCH since TTA, but here we are with Anthem where I just can't imagine skipping a song! It's been years since I've done that! Of course there are some songs I don't love as much as others, but I can still appreciate aspects of every song. For example, songs like "Scream and Be Free" just misses a little something for me, but there is a lot of the song I do really like.

One thing I have always loved about Hanson is that I do see them pushing themselves as artists, but still holding true to the essence that has made them great for so many years.

Some Favorites: "Lost Without You", "Juliet", "Tragic Symphony", "Already Home"

I'm proud to be a fan.

Hanson's last album was a homage to motown, so it's not really surprising that this one, called Anthem, borrows heavily from the anthem rock of the 1970s. You can still hear the motown sound, but with bits of Queen, U2, even Michael Jackson mixed in. It still sounds modern, though, and one track even reminds me of fun. There are very few songs here that I would skip over. It's a much more "Hansony" album than Shout It Out, with more guitar, less horns and power ballads all over the place. Definitely worthy of the title Anthem!

ANTHEM, arriving in the 21st year of Hanson history, plays big, REAL big. Right from the get-go you are bombarded with the idea that this band wants you to live life with a passion and a purpose. Make that dream a reality and, oh by the way, do it today because tomorrow may be a day too late; a mantra that these three brothers live by. That take charge attitude has never been more evident than right here.

I can honestly say that this album showcases Hanson at the top of their game. Each track is markedly different, but all reflect the spot-on multi-talented musicality of this band. Starting out so young has given these three plenty of time to hone their skills, and hone them they have. Never forgetting the tunes they grew up on, Hanson tapped into that knowledge and set out to produce an album that would be, well, anthemic! ...An album that paid homage to everyone from early Motown and Stax Records greats to Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Queen and U2. My antenna even picked up a few Dire Straits references, (but I'm sure that's just me).

Anyway, here's a quick rundown of the tracks (in no particular order):

Driving drum beats and soaring guitars add to the "take no prisoners" approach of "Fired Up" and "You Can't Stop Us". I swear Taylor is channeling Bono in "Fired Up", and you just can't miss the AC/DC connection. There are some very cool atmospheric sounds and a "Money For Nothing" style build up on "You Can't Stop Us". Zac starts this one off, but each brother sings a verse. These songs play big and loud! I love 'em! These two could be used at motivational conferences! Whew!

As a longtime fan of the band Hanson, I have watched their career with interest since 1997. I have seen the band's highs (megafame in 1997-1998) and lows (struggling with IDJ to release their own music in 2001-2003), the successes and the struggles, the amazing accomplishments and the near-defeats. Hanson has consistently risen from the ashes of their peers with consistently great music on album after album, but the general public has written off Hanson as a one-hit wonder, a boy band with "no talent", with no catalog of work other than MMMBop and Middle of Nowhere.

This way of thinking needs to END.

Hanson has done nothing but release fantastic music that both they and the general public should be proud to listen to, and Hanson's latest album, ANTHEM, is no exception.

Anthem is arguably Hanson's best work to date, full of guitar-driven, drum-pounding, piano pop/rock and soul. Each track was written by Isaac, Taylor, and Zac, no co-writers, and each brother has a large list of instruments to their credit. Listening to the first three tracks on the album is all it takes to be hooked, and before you know it the final moments of the final song will play, and you'll want to listen to it all over again.

This album deserves to be heard, so much more than 99% of the mainstream fluff that's on contemporary radio today. Stop reading this review, buy this album, and support real music! Hanson is the real deal, and they're going to be making music long after their contemporaries have faded away into the sunset.
