Great worship album,
By
This review is from: Anthem Song (Audio CD)
I love this album. I think might be my new favorite worship album. It's the perfect combination of inspiration and beautiful tone. It features some of my favorite well known Christian songs plus some great new songs. It is the perfect blend of toe tapping music and powerful lyrics. My favorite song on the album is his version of Hosanna. I love Aaron's voice though I can't put my finger on who he reminds me of. If you enjoy worship music with a little bit of rock, you'll love this album!

Aaron Gillespie has always been a talented man. When he was in Underoath, formed The Almost and now his own worship CD. I just bought the CD this morning - it has been on repeat every since. He has outdone his self this time. The Anthem Song has something for everyone. Every song is unique and great. This is going to be the best worship CD of 2011.-Ashley.

Aaron is absolutely talented. God is taking him places he never dreamed he would go. This album completely worships God, through and through. And of course, Aaron's talent shines. The rock format of this album won't appeal to everyone, but fans of underoath, seventh day slumber, and stellar kart should enjoy this.

I never liked Underoath, it was way too loud for me but Aarons new album has captivated me. He captures a sound that I haven't really heard in a long time in the Christian industry. Great job, Aaron.

Solid worship music, though musically a little hit-and-miss,
This review is from: Anthem Song [+Digital Booklet] (MP3 Download)
Aaron Gillespie has certainly had a successful career up to this point in his life. After playing drums for hardcore band Underoath for over a decade and fronting The Almost for a few years, he has truly made a name for himself in the musical world. Perhaps a desire to deflect that glory to God more directly has been a part of what has fueled Aaron's desire to record and release Anthem Song, which is a worship album through and through. With these songs, Aaron simply worships the one true God, and that makes this record great even when the music isn't at his creative best. What makes Anthem Song a distinctly solid album is the lyrics that come from a genuine heart of worship. There is hardly a hint of a self-centered attitude on this record; it's all about the Lord Jesus Christ, singing His praises, and declaring the truth of who He is, and there is nothing better for anyone to sing about. "Washed Away" reveals a desperate thirst for God's presence, "All Things" acknowledges that God is in control over all things, and "We Were Made For You" simply declares that we were made to worship Him and that He is God. Meanwhile, "You Are My Everything" acknowledges the sufficiency of Christ as all we need, while "Hosanna" and "Anthem Song" simply praise God for who He is. The lyrics are consistently solid and worshipful, making Anthem Song a great set of tunes to worship God with. Musically, most of the songs are distinctly lively and upbeat, which reflects the joy and life found in God; "Hosanna," "All Things," and the title track sound especially alive. There are some standout moments musically, such as the masterfully performed adaptation of "Earnestly I Seek Thee," which starts off with just an acoustic guitar and later escalates into a triumphant ending, a similar musical buildup that is a highlight of "I Will Worship You," and the groovy guitar and bass lines of "We Were Made For You." Unfortunately, Gillespie sometimes slips into a sound that is rather common among other artists. Despite the nice feel of songs like "Hosanna" and "Your Song Goes On Forever," those especially sound like songs you've probably heard before from other Christian artists. Also, "You Are Jesus" seems out of place with its moody style, and because of that it falls a little flat, as does the album closer, "I Am Your Cup," which is appropriately emotional but doesn't bring anything exciting to the table musically. Anthem Song, despite its faults, manages to be a rock solid worship album. The lyrics come from a genuine heart of worship, which is definitely the priority for projects like this, and the music matches the words nicely and ranges from positively upbeat to strongly emotional. If you can't stand music that isn't heavy on originality then Anthem Song might not be for you, but if you pass it up you'll still be missing out on some great songs to worship God with. |
