THE BEST BLACK METAL ALBUM EVER, July 27, 2007
After a very impressive release with 'In The Nightside Eclipse', Emperor comes screaming back with this crowning achievement!! After 'Nightside' The band was rocked by various issues, wich has been covered so I'm not going to discusss it, and it was a question wheather they would continue as a band. The answer is definetly YES!! Ihsahn put the skeleton of the album together and, communicating with Samoth, worked out the songs.
With new drummer Trym(ex-Enslaved) and new bassist Alver, Emperor have created a very extreme album, but at the same time, very emotive and atmospheric. With the opening track, they seem to capture the sounds of the northern forest before the second track blows up in your face! From that point on, it is a roaller coaster of sounds and atmosphere.
The track that stands out is the 8 min. plus 'With Strength I burn' wich captures the bands brutal, but atmospheric and emotive style like no other song. In addition, the lyrics tell a haunting story with 'properly sung' parts. As the album draws to a close, we are treated to a classical, symphonic piece to show the bands classical European influence.
If there is one negative thing that could be said, it is the production. It is common for black metal bands to have a merky, analog sounding production to create an 'ambient' atmosphere, and this is no different. It sounds like all the music is recorded on just one track. The music is still legible and awesome, but it is merky and the vocals at times are VERY hard to hear.
Mayhem created this style of music with the songs on 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas', but Emperor has perfected it!
BY FAR THE BEST BLACK METAL ALBUM EVER!!

Love the music, not the production, February 21, 2009
Black metal, particularly the 1990s Norwegian variety, has always been frustrating for me. There are a lot of bands whose music I find nothing short of brilliant, yet I can barely stand listening to it because of the deliberately awful production. "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" (and especially "Wrath of the Tyrant" and "In the Nightside Eclipse") are good examples. I love the music on "Anthems", but every time I hear it I am distracted by the muffled, thin, hollow production. They only way you'd know that they even have a bass player is from the liner notes. It really takes away from my enjoyment of the music, and that's a shame because this is one of the greatest pieces of extreme metal ever created.
"Anthems..." is at times fast, heavy, and even brutal, but also melodic and majestic, with a dark grandeur that has been imitated by many but never duplicated. Ihsahn is on my short list of metal musicians that I consider to be nothing short of a genius. Songs like "Ye Entrancemperium" and "With Strength I Burn" are absolute classics, and there really isn't a bad song to be found. Few vocalists can shred their throats with the kind of cold ferocity brought forth by Isahn, and combine it with effective clean vocals. Also, Trym was definitely an upgrade from their former drummer, whose exploits have already been well covered.
I would happily give this five stars except for the production. I just can't understand why a man as otherwise intelligent (and obviously musically gifted) as Ihsahn would choose to castrate the music he worked so hard to write and record with such an empty, murky production. What I wouldn't give to have Emperor's catalog re-recorded/re-mastered by a top caliber producer such as Neil Kernon (just listen to Akercocke's astounding "Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone" to know what I mean).
