Jim Ed is the best!,
By Fern Benoit (Edmonds, Wa., USA) - See all my reviews

I grew up listening to Jim Ed and Helen..I think that Jim Ed Brown has one of the smoothest, most mellow voices out there and Helen Cornelius is a perfect complemet to him.

The forgotten seventies country duo,

The seventies were a vintage decade for country duos. Every country fan knows about Porter and Dolly, George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta, Kenny and Dottie - but it seems that Jim Ed and Helen have been largely forgotten. At least we can be thankful that the good people at the now-defunct Renaissance records remembered.Jim Ed Brown had a long career behind him when he found the ideal duet partner in the hitherto-unknown Helen Cornelius. They recorded three duet albums. A greatest hits album was also released. This anthology contains twenty of their finest songs, including two solos each and sixteen duets. Their career together began with two huge hits on the country charts - I don't want to have to marry you (number one) and Saying hello saying I love you saying goodbye (number three), both from 1976. They had further hits over the next few years, but although none were as big as those two, they were all of a high quality, as all their music was. Among the other songs here, my favorites are Fall softly snow (a lovely, romantic Christmas song), I'm leaving it up to you (originally an American hit for Dale and Grace, it was an international hit for Donny and Marie Osmond), You don't bring me flowers (an international hit for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand) and Don't bother to knock. This is a lovely collection by a great duo. It may be hard to find now, but you should at least be able to find Fall softly snow on a country Christmas collection, as well as some of their hits on country compilations.

Just been playing some seventies tracks i'd recorded originally on reel-tape and more recently transfered to minidisc.Sound is still pretty good, but i'd like the two gems,"Fools" and "I Don't Want To Have To Marry You" to be perfect, but not at this price! As i've waited 30 years already,I suppose I can wait some more, but not 30 years 'cause i'm seventy already!

There Is Always Room for One More Duet!,

According to Billboard, Jim Ed Brown from Sparkman, Arkansas and Helen Cornelius, from Hannibal, MO had 13 chart hits from 1976 to 1981. All are here on this well produced CD. Favorite tracks are always subjective but this reviewer liked a sad "The Bedroom", a sensuous "Morning Comes Too Early" and one of country's classic cheating songs, "Fools". It is a doleful backward comment on the state of country music outlets here in New York City that "Fools" was the only Jim Ed/Helen recording to receive any play from the late and lamentable WHN. Besides the 13 chartmakers, there is also a nice countrified "I'm Leaving It Up to You", the old Dale and Grace hit. Moreover the country standard "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" and a Christmasy "Fall Softly Snow" receive solid treatment. Helen performs fine solos of "What Are You Doing After Midnight" and "There's Always a Goodbye". That one actually failed to make the country charts for Anne Murray, despite its popularity. The only tracks that did not impress were 2 Jim Ed solos. Maybe the guy simply sang better with a woman by his side, whether Helen or his sisters, Bonnie and Maxine. But since George was helped by Tammy, Conway by Loretta and Porter by Dolly, that places Jim Ed in illustrious Country Company! The bottom line is that "Anthology" is a pleasant CD. There is always room for one more set of male/female duets. This one should be added to the collection of serious country listeners.

It is a clean country song to listen to and you can understand thewords to and it really tells the truth. There voices blend good together and one voice dose not over power the other one.
