3.0 out of 5 stars More Than A Bit Frustrating For The Completist Collector
When I purchased this compilation, my "want list" included six Top 40 hits by The Impressions and, according to the list of contents on the reverse, all six were included.

Only when I got home, opened it, and read the liner notes did I realize that I STILL have to obtain three of those hits: Amen [Disc 1 -track 14 - "is the extended version from ABC-Paramount...

Like all his soul mates of the sixties,CURTIS MAYFIELD started with his IMPRESSIONS a gentle and delicate sound, well suited to his low voice.By the end of the sixties,CURTIS turned socially conscencious and his writing deepened enough to become more than simple entertainment.CURTIS reached his peak with CURTIS and the soundtrack for the movie SUPERFLY.Still, those early IMPRESSIONS songs like GYPSY WOMAN,MINSTREL AND QUEEN,IT'S ALL RIGHT and PEOPLE GET READY retain their particular charm. This good anthology covers both his music with THE IMPRESSIONS and his solo career.CURTIS's voice is not like any other of the time, his sweet tone is like velvet.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Does Not Get Much Better, September 30, 2003
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
Curtis Mayfield is one of the most impressive musical talents I have ever encountered. And while this set is not perfect it offers an adequate sampling of Mayfield's genius. Mayfield's genius goes far beyond his always inspired singing and beautiful musically orchestration. Thanks to Curtis, The Impressions are the soul of soul music and Mayfield's ability to expose himself and sing with such intense feeling and sincerity is heroic and inspiring. Just as evident as Mayfield's emotional heroism and extraordinary musical talent is his sensitivity and cutting intelligence. As for the songs themselves? They are the manifestation of these words. Curtis is as true as it gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Anthology 1961-1977, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
This CD represents the best of Curtis Mayfield. He was undoubtedly a soul genius who could touch my inner soul with the vivacious joy in his singing, the jubilation, and the determination in his voice as he sings "Keep on Pushin",for example. The Impressions were my favorite soul group of the sixties. As a teenager I had an opportunity to meet and talk to them backstage at the Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.I was starstruck of course, but I thought that they were the coolest guys in the world to take the time to speak with me.
While listening to the CD as I write this review,I think what a shame that many so kids of this generation will never have the opportunity to hear this great music. One of the things that mystifies me is why the so-called "old school" radio stations never play much beyond "Superfly" as a tribute to Mayfield when he wrote so much great music for the Impressions,Jerry Butler,The Staple Singers,Billy Stewart,Major Lance,Aretha Franklin, and many others. The music was romantic, touching, relevant, and simply beautiful with excellent lyrics;wonderfully executed harmonies; Johnny Pate's exemplary powerful and soulful arrangements;and of Curtis'inspired guitar licks. The Anthology CD is a testament to Mayfield's glory and certainly worth the time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Testament to A Legendary Musician, January 3, 2000
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
In the Biblical imagery Curtis Mayfield was fond of writing in, he transitioned from Moses shouting "People get ready! There's a train a-comin'!" to Jeremiah warning, "If There's Hell Below, We're All Going to Go," to the Job-like figure patiently accepting long-overdue accolades even as the musical talent he was honored for and the basic motion skills we take for granted were removed from him. Finally, days before Christmas, God granted Curtis the gift of peace and rest he long believed in and sung about.

This 2-disc set testifies to Mayfield's legacy as guitarist, lyricist (psalmist?), arranger, and vocalist. Here, with the Impressions and solo, you find him exulting ("It's All Right," "Amen") boasting ("Woman's Got Soul," "I'm So Proud") rousing ("Keep On Pushing," "We're A Winner") and defending ("You Must Believe Me," the absolutely devastating "I've Been Trying.") As a personal opinion, Mayfield's solo work had been too shrill, too strident despite its deep influence, but only the best of it is included here. This set is absolutely essential for anyone who wishes to understand the music of the 60s and 70s, and the times that inspired it.

5.0 out of 5 stars People Get Ready for Curtis Mayfield, March 3, 2002

Curtis Mayfield, prolific songwriter, producer, and musical pioneer of all times. This album features a wide range of hits by Curtis Mayfield (the man himself)& The Impressions. This cd captures each of Curtis' songwriting abilities which raised social consiousness and awarness. You have such hits as "Gypsy Woman", "People Get Ready" "Keep On Pushin'", and "We're A Winner", which became the anthem for the Civil Rights Movement.
This cd is a collaboration of songs for both young and old followers of the late Curtis Mayfield. Even though, Curtis has left us, his spirit lives on in each and everyone of these songs. Curtis, even though you have parted, you have left us with a lifetime of music. You will be forever remembered in our hearts, minds and souls.

*Personal Note:
Thank you for a lifetime of music and lifetime of memories, that I will always cherish for the rest of my life. May your soul rest in peace...Minstrel! Love, Arlena.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of an overlooked master..., June 8, 2000

The first single we ever bought in my house was The Impressions "Gypsy Woman". Curtis was just beginning what I call his Minstrel Stage. Not minstrel as in black face, but minstrel as in wandering story teller. With intricate arrangements he told stories of unrequited love, lost love, innocent school boy angst. In some strange way, his development and transmutations as a singer songwriter paralleled my development as a man and human being.

The man has penned several songs which are rightfully considered "classics" and his music should rightfully be considered the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement. He was an amazing storyteller, writer and musician and anyone with money in their pockets should buy this CD.

Curtis Mayfield was quite simply the most talented R&B singer/songwriter of his generation. Though greatly underrated during his lifetime, Mayfield is now acknowledged as one of true musical geniuses of the classic R&B/soul era. This collection, now nearly 14 years old, is still the best and most varied summation of his work (both with the Impressions and solo) available; the remastering is superb and crisp. This set belongs in any music collection that purports to take R&B/soul music seirously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here There and Everywhere, March 21, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
Yes, that's the name of a Beatles tune, but it can just as easily dedscribe the range of Curtis Mayfield. You could hear him in your church (Amen, People Get Ready), or on the street (Superfly, Pusherman, Freddy's Dead), or in a protest march. No anthology is the whole story, but this is certainly a good starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pure Classic!!!!, August 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
Curtis Mayfield is, without question, one of the most influential songwriters and performers of this century. This comprehensive anthology captures the musical and lyrical genius of this artist.

Mr. Mayfields soulful artistry is captured on this recording, taking the form of pulsating instrumental arrangements, textured vocal harmonies and well crafted melodies of his music. We are also able to witness the progressive maturity of his musicianship through the contents of this CD.

This is a definite must have for anybody who is a fan of classic soul/r&b.
