Dizzy Gillespies is one of the most prominent figures in the history of jazz, remembered for brilliant, effortless playing, shining performances and masterful recordings. He is also remembered as a teacher who passed his knowledge on to many future jazz greats, including the inimitable Charlie Bird Parker, as well as injecting his music with complex Latin rhythms to create a sound later known as Afro-Cuban jazz. Focusing primarily on the years 1945 and 1946, Anthology represents Gillespie s most creatively adventurous period, a time of groundbreaking collaborations with Parker, who appears on the first three tracks of this compilation, when this new jazz was still quite foreign to the world of big bands.
