I was in a class 5 years ago that used the Norton Anthology of Western Music. It was more expensive, but much more tasteful.

This is an authoritative study of "early music" in the Western World. It is the textbook for a course I will be taking in the fall which studies this period. I have also purchased the CDs which are imperative to the understanding of the text.
