Just A Taste of Genius,
By
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
Any list of the greatest female vocalists of the twentieth century will have to include Fancy Miss Nancy Wilson. Blessed with a stunning and supple voice, unusually gifted at lyric interpretation, perfect timing, color and intonation, formidable stage presence and great beauty, Wilson has it all. And, according to the liner notes on this splendid anthology of the years she spent on the Capitol label (1962-1979), her voice and style were essentially the same when she was a young girl as it is today. Of course, listening to the tracks assembled here, which range from her first sessions (the classic "Save Your Love from Me," Jimmy Scott's "Why Did You Leave Heaven?" and signature "Guess Who I Saw Today") to the ill-advised disco of "Life, Love and Harmony", you can hear her voice deepen and her song readings darken and mature. This 2-CD set spotlights the commercial singles highlights of Nancy's Capitol tenure, focusing heavily on her R&B chart impact, and makes a good case for her as a viable soul singer in the 1960s. But whether she is belting out "Face It Girl, It's Over," crooning "Peace of Mind" and "You'd Better Go," working with Gamble and Huff on the oozing "Now I'm A Woman," or pulling out every last emotional stop on "The Greatest Performance of My Life," Nancy imbues each and every song with jazz-specific attitude and phrasing. "Nancy Wilson Anthology" is wonderful, but it is just a taste of the genius that is Nancy Wilson. It will prompt you to explore her many, many other LPs and CDs.

THE ONLY DIVA,
By
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
When all of my friends were listyening to the Stones,Hendrix, etc.,I was chillin'with Miss Nancy. This anthology, while not perfect contains most of the major Nancy moments including her pop and R&B hits, plus some stunning album cuts. Any future divas out there, this is your Master Class. Listen to "I'll Get Along Somehow" and see how it's done.

Not Completely Honest Compilation but Good for New Entrants,
By
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
If you're a new entrant in Nancy Wilson's scenario and want to get an overall view of the important times of her career (Capitol EMI Records), this is the 2-CD pack. However it's not honest to repeat some tracks from other albums which are currently available. First CD is the best one because covers her early times with great musicians and repertoire. The second CD covers R&B and pop hits from the 70s. I would fully recommend you listening to her extraordinary performance on "Don't Misunderstand" (arrangement by Don Sebesky) from the second CD besides her old greatest hits on the first CD, like "Face it Girl, It's Over" and "Guess Who I Saw Today".

Miss Nancy Wilson...last of the legendary divas,

"Anthology" is a must for any Nancy Wilson fan or lover of good jazz. It's a great compilation and includes live performance. I recently saw Miss Wilson in concert and she is even better live than recorded...if that's possible. It was a dream come true to hear the beauty and power of this legend in person, but now everyone has the opportunity to hear her heart and soul...and wit...for themselves. And with the number and variety of songs on this album...there's something for everyone. Miss Wilson has many more singing years ahead of her to give us enough new (and old) songs for "Anthology II."

Fancy Ms. Nancy,

The foward to this album starts off by telling you that this is the soulful side of Nancy Wilson and with good reason. The two disc cd-set is extraordinary. From the classic,"Save your Love for me" w/Cannonball Adderley to the Stevie Wonder,"All in Love Is Fair". This album is Nancy at her best! If you have not had the pleasure of listening to this wonderful songbird, this collection is for you. Check out,"The grestest performance of my life" and the live version of "guess who I saw today" both of these songs demonstrate what it is like to see Nancy live in concert. Thank you capitol for releasing the 60's and 70's contributions from lady Nancy.

I'm just getting into Ms. Nancy Wilson music over the last couple of months, its been a very good journey. I've been a fan since her columbia days like in the 80's and 90's, like, dont ask my neighbor, do you still dream about me, heavens hands, from a lady with a song cd, and my all time favorite hello like before and if i had my way from the cd if i had my way ...remake of bill withers song, well i got this cd because this is more music from her label she was on then, capitol records, that i dont have and a few i heard on the radio a few times and didnt know it was her... like tell me the truth, and some more songs, its a great cd to lead into her more secular r&b music, which she does beautifully to me... get it and you will see. I have purchased all her cds that are on cd so far. Another cd thats a favorite of mine is But Beautiful made in 1969, very nice cd, listen to samples of that one on here.

RIGHT DOWN TO OUR SOUL,

You know that line in Madea's Family Reunion where the groom says "I love you past my mind--beyond my heart--right down to my soul"; well that's how my husband and I feel about this CD set. Nancy Wilson's music is timeless and spans the generations. We're 37, have 3 children and they love it as much as we do.

Nancy Wilson - Anthology,

Nancy Wilson is one of the great singers of our time, and the Nancy Wilson Anthology is a collection of her very best. I am happy to be the owner of this great collection. Of all the Great Ladies of Music, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn and Della Reece, Nancy Wilson has always been able to sooth my soul, when I wish to just relax and get away from a hectic world.
Try it, just put on your headphones, Nancy Wilson and escape.

This wonderful Anthology by Ms. Wilson is to say the least "simply beyond description"
No one, absolutely no one, can phrase a song with the style and range that she can. Each Disc bares her trademark range with such simplicity that I swoon everytime I hear her. I have re-introduced Ms. Wilson to my friends who are much younger than I and they have fallen in love with her. We just wish that she toured more often, but understand. Thank you Ms. Wilson for your talent and the wonderful way you sing to all of us and make us all feel our emotions to the nth degree. Like I said, there is no other. |
