Book Description

October 14, 1999
This is the first volume in a projected five-volume work covering the full expanse of Persian thought from the Zoroastrianism of the pre-Christian era up to the present day. Introducing this extensive body of work for the first time in English translation, these volumes will be of great interest to scholars of philosophy, religion, and Middle Eastern studies. Volume I includes the work of the earliest Zoroastrian writers and that of thinkers from the early Islamic period. The translators include many outstanding scholars from America, Europe, and the Islamic world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In providing access to ... valuable sources [--a wide range of philosophical texts of Persia from pre-Islamic times to the modern age--], it fulfils a laudable endeavor . . . presents much new material to the reader . . . facilitate[s] teaching and understanding. A major contribution and once it is complete (in five or six projected volumes), it will no doubt transform the way in which we perceive and study philosophical traditions in Persia."--Sajjad H. Rizvi, Iranian Studies, Summer/Fall 2002

5.0 out of 5 stars Ambitious anthology, April 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia: Volume I (Hardcover)
This marks the first volume of an ambitious anthology project headed by Seyyed Hossein Nasr and Mehdi Aminrazavi. The goal is eventually have 4-5 volumes. What is impressive about this work is that for the first time, many of the most important philosophical texts will be made available in contemporary and scholarly translations. While there is no shortage of books on Islamic philosophy, it has been very difficult to find accurate translations of Islamic philosophical texts. One would imagine that this project would be of interest to students of Islamic thought, as well as Aristotelian and Neoplatonic philosophy. We look forward to the future volumes which will deal with Isma'ili and Kalam texts as well. Highly recommended.
