For over two decades, Bloch, Green, and Chodoff's Psychiatric Ethics has been the leading text on ethical issues in psychiatry and mental health. This Anthology of Psychiatric Ethics will serve as an invaluable companion volume, providing ready access to foundational writings concerning the ethical practice of psychiatry, previously published articles and excerpts of book chapters selected on the basis of their significance to psychiatric ethics. It is structured in nine sections: Philosophical Underpinnings; The Therapeutic Relationship and Social Context; Psychiatric Diagnosis; Confidentiality; Psychiatric Treatment and Services; Special Populations; Forensic Psychiatry; Resource Allocation; and Research. Each chapter is prefaced with an essay that presents an introductory overview designed to help guide the reader through the topic and the individual readings. Each chapter contains between six and twelve selected readings, and is extensively referenced for further investigation of the individual study areas.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Anthology provides nine chapters of classic papers in the field of psychiatric ethics, each prefaced by a thoughtful introductory essay by the editors...The Anthology is a worthwhile companion to the editors' other significant work in the field, Psychiatric ethics." It certainly belongs in any medical or university library clubs. For those conducting research in psychiatric ethics, the articles and their references are a valuable source of bibliography."--Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry

"I thought the selection of papers excellent and practical...I would suggest that anyone who is interested in psychiatric ethics should buy this book; and certainly anyone who is involved in teaching juniors."--British Journal of Psychiatry

"...a comprehensive collection of more than 75 readings in the field. This anthology is helpful and useful for both those that have to teach in the field of mental health and those who are interested in a deeper understanding of the different issues in psychiatric ethics...I would recommend this anthology as an excellent reference and introductory work to the topic of psychiatric and mental health ethics."--Medicine, Healthcare and Philosophy

I picked up two texts for my postgraduate course in Psychiatric Ethics: one was Bloch & Green's "Psychiatric Ethics" and the other Green & Bloch's "Anthology of Psychiatric Ethics". To this novice, the latter is the winner, and a real treasure. Rather than writing about it themselves, Green and Bloch let the original authors speak through this selection of essential readings. "Theoretical Foundations" chapter has the likes of Pellegrino, Mill and Kant lay the general ethical groundwork, augmented by articles on casuistry and ethics of care. Each subsequent chapter has at least one if not more outstanding texts which are essential reading in the field. Thus, "Diagnosis" has Boorse, Wakefield and Szasz, while original writings by Freud are in the "Social Domain". The Tarasoff case is fully quoted in "Confidentiality" while Dworkin discusses "Autonomy". I could go on describing each chapter, but in the end the point is that this one single text gives the novice reader all the groundwork required to approach the field with confidence.
