5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz That Really Rocks!, September 23, 2002

This review is from: Anthony James Baker (Audio CD)
At first play you might think this guy sounds similar to jazz guitar players like Peter White or Mark Whitfield, but the more I've listened to 'Salamander' the more I appreciate it's depth and complexity. Baker's past as a session musician provides this CD with a lot of confident playing, and the guitar work is just faultless. Nearly all the songs are self-penned and they really show off his style and range as both an acoustic and electric artist. The title track is just made for radio play, while Shine, a haunting ballad, drips with Jeff Beck-like atmosphere. Baker also gets some great backing on this CD, with some highly complementary sax from Nelson Rangell and particularly solid drum work from Darrin Johnson. It's a great first CD, and I'm waiting for the next one from this fresh new talent soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD, January 17, 2002

I'm not usually a follower of instrumental music. However, this CD hit a chord. It has smooth transitions and very emotional tonal qualitites. I was impressed with the arrangements of all the songs. I find myself humming the tunes frequently and am excited about a follow-up CD.
