Billed as a concerto for DJ and orchestra , Anthony De Ritis's Devolution
is a dynamic mash-up of a contemporary take on Ravel s Bolero
and hip-hop, or more specifically, turntables, manned by DJ Spooky (Paul D. Miller). Drawing also from Beethoven s Symphony No. 7, Devolution
succeeds in marrying these two seemingly antithetical genres. Robert Kirzinger writes, Spooky s deconstruction (or devolution) intensifies the displacement of the familiar Ravel; the listener is both comforted by that familiarity and made uneasy by the new surroundings. BMOP/sound is thrilled to present this new release, which also features two earlier works, Legerdemain
and Chords of Dust
, as it showcases the BMOP musicians at peak energy, led by Gil Rose.
