Anthropologist Fran Boas was a stalwart fighter for human rights and against racism. While he outwardly acknowledges that his book runs contrary to popular prejudices, Boas was an optimist, and hoped that dissenters, in reading Anthropology and Modern Life, would come to reexamine their own viewpoints dispassionately and critically.

About the Author
Herbert S. Lewis is professor of anthropology emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of numerous books including After the Eagles Landed: The Yemenites of Israel and A Galla Monarchy: Jimma Abba Jifar, Ethiopia, 1830-1932.
