Interesting and informative,

This review is from: Anthropology of Religion, Magic, and Witchcraft (Paperback)
This book is great for first-time anthropology students; it teaches basic as well as advanced concepts without seeming overly preachy or didactic. Its ethnographic examples focus mainly on so-called "primitive" societies, and allows the discerning reader to visualize the supernatural world time and time again through their eyes. A fantastic read!

This book is a great introduction to Anthropology. It clearly demonstrates to the reader what and how various practices came to be. This is my first exposure to the subject and this book is fascinating, informative, and fun to read. It is a text for my class, but I would have bought it just for the pleasure of learning something new, different and interesting. I would recommend this book to everyone who is interested in other cultures and religious beliefs.

Informative but dry,

This book is informative but repeats itself often. It can be a bit of a dry read for such an interesting subject but if you filter out the unnecessary repetition, it's not bad.

This book came in fantastic condition thanks to Amazon. I bought this particular book for some college courses I will be taking soon, and I dived right into the book. Depending on what you like, I would recomend it for just a knowledge read and work from there. I plan to keep this book even after my courses are finished and read all of it, just to gain what it offers.

Needed this book for my anthro class. This book is small but very informative. It packed with writing and few pictures to help the descriptions. Its an easy read and the writers really make the terms easy to understand.

This book is very easy to understand and gives excellent insight into religion, magic and witchcraft. Professor Stein, the author, was my professor when I took this class and she has thorough knowledge of the subject. I would read the book even if I hadn't taken the class.

I'm currently using this book for my Anthro class and it's great for introducing someone into the different aspects of religion, magic, and witchcraft. If you want to really get information though I would recommend the encyclopedia of religion by Mircea Eliade.
Consider this book more for an introduction than something to be used for in-depth research. I still like it and recommend it because it gets into allot of different subjects of the paranormal. It's also better than allot of garbage that is found in books stores on the subject. Consult your school/college anthro dept for recommendations.

Books like this are a good start. I do so love Anthropology. If you want to balance this, other books, Urban Shaman, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It!, Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, ThetaHealing can be helpful. So can The Divining Mind: A Guide to Dowsing and Self-Awareness. The stuff in this book cannot be understood by observation from a distance, it must be assumed, breathed, eaten. It is an aspect of the subconscious, and at times superconscious minds, which cannot be apprehended by the conscious mind, the ego. Also, one needs to enter this area with a strong idea of service to humanity, to beings. Without that, many things just don't work, or work only slightly. Grandfather would never show up in an anthropology class, nor would Whispers of the Ancients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time, or House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, or Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1), but these are very good basic books, to getting out of the box of White Man culture. Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives is a very superficial discussion of what spiritual apprenticeship could be. Chi Kung: Way of Power and Wong Kiew Kit's books show how ideas like this survive in Chinese culture. Western culture is lost in the literal, and won't look at the deeper meanings of its stories. Neville Goddard has ideas on this, as one example among many. So do Joseph Murphy The Power of Your Subconscious Mind. This book is a good start, though, sort of like a tourist guide to reflections from the subconscious mind.

I needed this as a textbook for my anthro 121 class. I didn't know at the time that it was actually written by my teacher! Anyway, it is a very, very good book and helps guide you through a subject that is not always easy to navigate through.

Firstly, the price was excellent, less than half of what the college bookstore's price was. The condition of the book was as described, like new. Though I did get my order within the seller's estimated arrival time(3 weeks), it seemed to take a little longer than other orders that were out of state also. Thats because I really needed it for class and did get it within two weeks, its all good now.
