Excellent information. I am a new nurse practitioner and did not get this info in NP school. Really explains bacterial biological processes and how antibiotics target them, then reviews various bacteria, followed by usual therapies for the most common disease states. It finishes up with clinical scenarios and review questions, as well as helpful tables. Loved it, and plan to periodically review it. I had a lot of "AHA" moments. What does this book lack? It should explain how to read a culture and sensitivity report, and the concept of minimum inhibitory concentration.

This book is excellent for those who either have no background with antibiotics or need a good review. The information is presented thoroughly and effectively. I would rate this book five starts and highly recommend it to everyone.

Antibiotic Basics Review,

This review is from: Antibiotic Basics for Clinicians: Choosing the Right Antibacterial Agent (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)) (Paperback)
Antibiotic Basics for Clinicians reads fairly quickly with lots of pictures and tables. This book talks about organisms separately from the drugs and has great appendixes for dosing. The book needs to have a more detailed discussion of clinical uses, drug interactions, and resistance for each drug. I kind of wish my professor had chosen another book, but she said that there were not many books like this one on the market.

Big disappointment. This book was quite boring and did not really add any helpful pneumonics, algorithyms or approaches to antibiotic choice or therapy. I do not believe this book adds anything to current teaching or even apps like Johns Hopkins Abx or Epocrates. Was hoping to learn more, but except for repeated analogies to castles, not sure what this book had to offer.

This book is the best, most clearly explained basic overview of antibiotics and their use I have come across. If you need a book that teaches the fundamentals such that they can be easily remembered, and built upon later, I highly recommend it.

This book does a wonderful job of bridging the book knowledge with clinical realities by explaining clearly and creatively the rationale for antibiotic selection. It gives an overview of the classes of antibiotics, followed by a very helpful section on specific classes of bacteria and related pathology. The section on Empiric Therapy brings it all together. There are clinical case studies, review questions/answers and great reference tables for dosing in special populations, such as peds, renal insufficiency and pregnancy. The author has a very down to earth style, easy to read. Many, many helpful charts, text boxes inserted throughout with clinical pearls and cautions. I wish I had found this book earlier in my training. So, why not a 5 star? Some of the tables where the author breaks down the antimicrobial activity of a given class using a type of green, yellow, red light system is a little confusing at times, and did not quite work for me.However, others may find those tables useful. Otherwise, a close to perfect book!

This is a nice little book, short, easy to read, but with a great deal of clinically useful information. Microbial flora differs between countries, as well as resistance patterns, but this is a general overview, and will be relevant almost everywhere. The only suggestions I have for the next edition is 1) I would have liked another chapter on drug interactions. A topic of increasing importance, and worth a more thorough discussion. 2) The book is confined to antibacterial agents, which is an understandable choice. However, covering antifungal agents would be a nice addition.
