5.0 out of 5 stars Great for medical students and resident physician, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Antibiotics Simplified (Paperback)
I would highly recommend this book for medical students and resident physicians. I have been an attending physician for almost 15 years in academic medicine in various teaching hospitals. I have found that antibiotic knowledge and its translation into practice is challenging for medical students and resident physicians. Furthermore, available guides are too simplistic (tables)and do not help with the fundamentals. In depth articles on single antibiotics are too comphrehensive. This small book fills the current gap. It begins with describing the sterile world, overview of gram positive/gram negative bacteria. Then, the chapters cover a general approach to infectious diseases. What follows are chapters on each class of antibiotics (1 1/2 pages each). It also includes helpful appendices such as Selected Normal Flora near the end. In Summary, I would highly recommend this book. It is readable, short, but stresses important principles. In just a few hours, one can be well-versed on antibiotics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, November 24, 2009

I am a hospital microbiologist. I was looking for a to-the-point, up-to-date, handy reference about current antimicrobial use. I am so pleased with this book that I think it should be required reading in college for any one intending to work in microbiology in a hospital setting! The book does not replace national, legal, guidelines -but it does say what our guidelines say. Every word in this book you need to know. Imagine the best to-the-point notes someone ever gave you...and including all the latest antimicrobials! This book stays close!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book, February 11, 2011

I am a first year PA student. I was feeling overwhelmed with all of the different abx's and this book has been so incredibly helpful. It is written in really simple language and instead of giving a ton of detail it gives the highlights of each drug class. It also does a great job of breaking down different organisms....I would highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the wards!, October 15, 2009

I bought this book to review for Step 2, but wish I had bought it at the beginning of third year. Antibiotics, whichever approach you take to learning them, will ultimately require a lot of rote memorization. Nevertheless, this book focuses on the most common clinical uses for each class of drugs and points out the most important clinical facts about each, thereby serving as a surrogate teacher helping to make sense of the wide world of antibiotics. This is a great resource to keep in your pocket, especially during an internal medicine or peds rotation - wish I had found it earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pharmacist's Perspective, January 2, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book does a fantastic job at fulfilling its objective to provide healthcare professionals a resource that is between quick reference charts and a textbook. It will reinforce your foundation in antibiotics in well-organized, concise chapters. The writing style is easy to read and refreshing in comparison to most other medical resources. I highly recommend it for any healthcare professional seeking to gain a stronger grasp on the confusing world of antibiotics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good refresher course for antibiotics, December 25, 2011

It's definitely simplified. Each antibiotic class is broken down into 3-4 pages, including short blurb on the mechanism of action, common side effects, and bacterial susceptibilities. There are also a few chapters on anti-tuberculosis, anti-viral, and anti-fungal medications. Several charts at the end of the book. Makes for a light read. Recommended for medical students and resident physicians who don't want to spend hours and hours on the subject.
