This review is from: Anticipate the School You Want: Futurizing K-12 Education (Paperback)
Shostak's book is very thoughtful. He doesn't waste time talking about problems in our school systems, he goes directly to solutions. His main emphasis is on teaching students the value of long term thinking. He uses the term "Futuristics" and discusses the methods that futurists use to study the future, then proposes that schools show their students how to apply these same methods in their schools and lives. In a traditional "futures thinking" approach, Shostak suggests that the reader, and by implication school systems, decide what they want the future to be like, then figure out how to achieve that future.
Shostak offers examples of successful use of these methods, citing the work of Futures Problem Solving International, an organization that offers programs in futures methods and long term thinking to school systems worldwide. He also includes examples of future scenarios written by students that demonstrate the student's grasp of forward thinking. The author closes with proposals for action, and along the way provides a very good list of references. |
