Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- While some of the humor here might be lost on young readers (the portrait of ``Rembr ant '' is a hoot), this `` ant hology'' is a hilarious alphabet book of people and concepts featuring the word ``ant'': bow-legged cowboy vigil ant es in 10-gallon hats and spurs, the philosopher K ant , a jubil ant game show contest ant , a hestit ant diver on a high board. The concept is clever and well executed, and the illustrations are wonderfully offbeat, and filled with personality and great expression. Some are more colorful than others, but the carefully textured and shaded colored-pencil drawings are equally effective and imaginative. The concept is carried through, literally from cover to cover, with ants carrying off the bar code on the back. While it would be difficult to use this book to teach the alphabet, it succeeds on so many other levels (humor, art, concept) that it will be enjoyed by young and old alike. A wonderful first effort. --Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

From Kirkus Reviews

Not truly an anthology--though the pun is forgivable--but an alphabet of words with the syllable ``ant'' (``Brilliant,'' ``Immigrants,'' ``Rembrandt,'' ``Xanthophile''), accompanied by imaginatively conceived ant characters: a slim, armored ``Gallant'' bowing to his monarch; ``Kant'' with pen and quizzically furrowed brow; a giant ``Mutant'' menacing an anteater; an ``Observant'' sleuth. Some of the whimsical details will most amuse older children, but there's a good balance between the accessible and words that provide a stretch. The deft color illustrations are in a smooth, lithograph-like style, entertainingly at odds with their lively content. A delightful vocabulary expander. 5.0 out of 5 stars A fun coffee table book, March 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Antics! (Paperstar) (Paperback)
I would recommend this book for kids of all ages it's the most unique alphabet book around. The illustrations are hillarious. Each page has a word that includes the word "ant." The best is unplesANT with a forlorn looking little boy ant sitting in front of a huge plate of peas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative! Original!, July 3, 2005
This review is from: Antics! (Hardcover)
This is one of the most creative books I've seen in a long time. The illustrations are also warm and funny. The simple single alphabet words are hysterical and orginal. My personal favorites are the mad scientist ant who is brilliANT, the punk rocker who is a deviANT and the huddled family of immigrANTs. Well done and kudos to the author.
