4.0 out of 5 stars Listen to other tracks besides After Hours before buying...., March 28, 2000

This review is from: Antidote (Audio CD)
I happen to like this album quite a bit, but for me the attraction is mainly due to the fact that I'm into rap music as well. Not to say that any of the cuts on this album constitute rap per se, but every song seems to have a distinct urban flavor to it--with the notable exception of After Hours.

After Hours is without a doubt the signature piece on the album, one of the single most brilliant songs in the hisory of light jazz. You've probably heard it countless times on your favorite light jazz radio station, and once you hear it, it'll be in your head for hours! Absolutely beautiful. But if I had bought The Antidote it expecting every song to have After Hours' easygoing sound and indescribable "coolness", I'd have been sorely disappointed. Viva la RealAudio! Use it, folks; listen to samples before you buy. As I said, I personally like the urban style that IMHO seems to be shared by every other song on the album, so I got the best of both worlds (After Hours plus 8 or 9 other nice tracks). If you're not into the more urban type of light jazz, you may not like the album. So give the non-After-Hours cuts a listen. Me, I couldn't be happier.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ronnie Jordan's Jazzy debut ..., May 21, 1999

The U.K.'s Ronnie Jordan was an optimistic sensation in the early '90's. His 1992 CD, "The Antidote," played a vital mix of the up-and-coming Hip-hop/Jazz genre. Jordan's melodic talent shines in his debut CD. Smooth rhythyms, syncopatic bass-drum combinations, and hip urban raps tie into Jordan's deep "Antidote." Jordan makes no qualms expressing his guitar playing abilities. His talented fingers rival Norman Brown's in quick, witty notes, and Wes Montgomery-like fluidity. Ronnie Jordan seemed to have a very talented producer, whom he has unfortunately removed from his future CD's.

Jazz and Hip-hop listeners will fall for Ronnie Jordan. "The Antidote" is exceptionally good medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ronny Jordan, July 14, 2006

I was looking for a Jazz version of Miles Davis' song "So What" that utilized vocals - I didn't find it. I 'stumbled' onto Ronny Jordan's version - and dug it! Clean, crisp, well-structed and performed. Just as you start grooving, the CD is finished. The fastest 46+ minutes on disc! Good job, Ronny and company! (where have I been for the 14 years that this disc has been out? Mars, I guess! How I missed this man and his talent is beyond me!!!) Five stars!
