5.0 out of 5 stars Important History and Context for the Silver Student!
I originally took this book out (along with all the others that I could find on collecting silver) from my local library. The other books seemed to focus on assigning a market value to various objects and illustrated lots of different makers' marks. Little explanation was given for the industry terms that the books used or for the comparative values assigned to...

2.0 out of 5 stars A history of silver
This short work covers the evolution of silver (mainly table) items, from the 17th through the 19th centuries. This review is from: Antique Silver and Silver Collecting (Hardcover)
I originally took this book out (along with all the others that I could find on collecting silver) from my local library. The other books seemed to focus on assigning a market value to various objects and illustrated lots of different makers' marks. Little explanation was given for the industry terms that the books used or for the comparative values assigned to different objects.

"Antique Silver and Silver Collecting" is the first book I've found that offers a good history of silver making and design. This history is far more important than dollar signs in that it allows me to understand and appreciate the antique silver that I encounter and in that it allows me to use my own judgement in assessing the value of various antique pieces.

Because this book is out of print, I just bought a used copy.

I do not recommend this book.
