Book Description

A Schiffer Book for Collectors
Since 1973 Michael Adler's first book, The Writing Machine, has been affectionately called "the bible of the typewriter enthusiast." The renowned typewriter expert's new book, is sure to stimulate the same enthusiasm all over again, bringing you new and as yet unpublished insights into the origins of the invention itself in a detailed history of the machine. Over 250 photographs illustrate this definitive text, which includes comprehensive directories of typewriter inventions, makes, and models, and a concise guide to their values with advice on buying and collecting. How much? When? Where? How good? How rare? Who? Why? If you are looking for answers to any or all of these questions, Antique Typewriters is the ultimate reference book for you - from the novice typewriter collector to "seasoned old hand" enthusiasts and historians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, a good choice, December 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Antique Typewriters: From Creed to QWERTY (Hardcover)
Great photos, but not much more information than The Writing Machine. You will find magnificent color photos of nearly all the collectible typewriters. Prices sometimes seems not to reflect market conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Sequel, January 18, 2009
This review is from: Antique Typewriters: From Creed to QWERTY (Hardcover)
If you are interested in the history of the typewriter, stripped of its nationalistic slants, its inadequate or erroneous previous histories, and beautifully illustrated, you must add this book to your collection. A sequel, in a sense, to Adler's first book, this briefly touches on the historical background then details the great and not so great machines from the earliest inventors to the last. It's an important work about one of the most important technological developments of the last several hundred years. Here you see it, and are able to realize and appreciate it as a tool, an artwork, and a mechanical marvel. Be sure to read his first book as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars History of typewriters, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Antique Typewriters: From Creed to QWERTY (Hardcover)
Michael Adler is a recognized authority on and collector of antique typewriters and has produced an excellent volume with thorough text, drawings and many color photographs of antique machines, printed on coated paper. The book also has a good bibliography and index. If you have any interest whatsoever in old typewriters and related machines, you should own this book Antique Typewriters: From Creed to QWERTY.
