4.0 out of 5 stars It's working for me, August 12, 2007
This is a nice, solid, sturdy bed desk/breakfast tray. It's definitely sturdy enough to support a large laptop computer or a full breakfast. The "table" in the center tilts to about three positions with a solid metal bracket in the back to hold it up. I've been using the most upright setting to hold books I'm reading. I'm quite pleased with it.

There's no rim around the outside. I generally consider this to be a feature, but it does suggest that if you pick it up while it's loaded, you run the risk of things sliding off.

It's surprisingly large. There's plenty of "leg room" for a normal-to-overweight sized adult, although it should be obvious that if your belly sticks up more than about eight inches, then you're not going to be able to put an 8.5" tall tray over it while you're lying down. I estimate that the inside space (where your legs go) is just over 16 inches wide at the base, and tapers in so that it's about 14 inches wide at the top. At any rate, it works for me, and I'm a tall and overweight woman.

The tray arrives pre-assembled in a huge box. Unlike another one I considered, but ultimately decided against, it is NOT collapsible, and you'll want to think about where you're going to store it. It is NOT lightweight. It's not really heavy -- maybe about the same as a gallon of milk -- but a very sick or disabled person may not be able to move it very easily.

On the down side, the "spokes" that make up the baskets on the side are pretty enough, as you can see in the photo, but they are set so far apart that you can't really keep anything small in it. There's a little pencil tray in the front to keep a pen or pencil from rolling away, but anything smaller than a book is likely to fall out. I've been thinking about stitching a "pocket" or liner for one of the baskets.

One of my primary goals was to be able to prop a book up on it. Of course, most books won't lie flat. I wish that this had a method for securing pages, perhaps along the lines of what some music stands use. As an interim measure, I've tied two pieces of plain cotton string around the "tabletop" and use them to hold the covers of the book open. That reduces the strain on my forearms. I may eventually come up with a more permanent solution, but so far this is adequate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, November 10, 2008
I am often bed-bound. This desk has been very useful to me. It supports an average-sized laptop, even when the desk part is elevated. I like this feature because I can type while looking at a screen that is almost eye level. And in the meantime, I am not straining my neck. It also keeps the laptop weight off of my lap.
It is very sturdy. I have used it as a dinner table, as a writing surface, and as already mentioned a laptop table.
I don't find the side baskets very useful. If you put books in it, the desk becomes too heavy to manage. It can be cumbersome to move around in bed. And it does not collapse, so it takes up some space in the bedroom. But, I sewed a cover for it that matches my bedding and it goes well in my bedroom.
There is plenty of leg-room to maneuver without feeling constrained.
Overall, I am very happy with this tray and would purchase it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased!, November 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First, it arrived very quickly and was in perfect condition. There were no scratches, cracks, etc. and the walnut finish is really lovely. Also, there was no assembly required - a definite plus, for me.

I bought this table while I was looking after my mother, who recently had spinal surgery. For the first couple of weeks she spent most of her time in bed, and this table made the world of difference. With a neck brace on, she had limited mobility to look down, so the adjustable shelf was perfect for bringing things closer to her. While raised, it easily supported her reading materials and also her laptop, so the screen was eye-level.

The side compartments are great for storage, though the slats are very wide. We made liners for the interior and that minor problem was solved. She kept her knitting on one side and books and magazines on the other. It made my job easier, since all I really had to do was move the table either on the bed or off -- no searching around for the bag of crafts and then the books and pens, etc., etc. Everything was right there and ready to go. Also, for meals we would just lower the shelf back down.

I am extremely pleased with this product - it really was a great find! Functional and aesthetically pleasing.
