All of the Gypsy titles are some of the best music ever produced and you never heard of them. Tsk Tsk. This band had a lot of bad luck to blame for that. I grew up in Stl where they were a cult favorite. Buy this album and buy the first self titled album and also 'In the garden' and you Wont only Not go wrong, youll be shaking your head and wondering whats wrong with the world that youve never heard this. All 3 albums are timeless masterpieces that Id take with me on that deserted island after all the nukes were dropped to preserve and play for future civilizations who thanks to me will think this is what Rock is all about instead of aerosmith.

First, let me say I love this album and have considered it to be a valuable part of my collection for nearly 30 years. I originally purchased the cassette(!) in 1977 and played it to death. In the mid eighties, I located an original RCA Dynaflex pressing, which sounded better than the cassette, but didn't stand up to repeated playings (black vinyl literally was shaved off each time I played it). I happily bought this CD from Bedrock when it first became available. The good news is that someone has seen fit to produce a CD of this great music by Gypsy. The bad news is...it's from a vinyl copy. If the unmistakable sound of vinyl equalization (especially at the end of the sides) doesn't tip you off, the subtle (but definitely present) surface noise and occasional static will. Granted, it's from a very good vinyl copy, but it's still vinyl-a far cry from what the CD should be made from: the two track, unequalized stereo master. My rating for this item consists of a 5 for the material and a 1 for the presentation. I apologize for raining on anyone's parade, but I believe everyone should know the truth about this release. There is no misrepresentation here (the CD says nothing about the source of the audio), but neither is there any acknowledgment that is IS indeed taken from a vinyl album. While I am happy to listen to the CD I have, for now I can only imagine how great a proper remastering would sound.

Record collectors have a problem. At least I do as one. We go out and spend a lot of money, buying massive amounts of records from dollar and not-so-dollar bins. Listen to one out of the 14 you bought, and a day or two later, you are back to the thrill of the hunt, prowling the metropolis to find more music that you'll play tonight, well, ok, tommorow. On the turntable and here we go and--wait just a minute, the baby's crying. Well, over the weekend, um.......when you take your vacation next month.
Five years later, great music sits in your stacks, forgotten, unlistened to. It is not unusual for me to be listening to WFMU, my local free form station, hear something, and wait with pad, pen and bated breath: I gotta get this, what is it, What Is It. WHAT IS IT!!!! I GOTTA GET THIS. OK, IT'S........oh, I have it. Well, can't play it now. I have to go record shopping. Gypsy was, unfortunately, one of those five year neglect jobs, that sat dusty in my "to be played tomorrow pile." since George W. got re-elcted. This is tight, slick, 70s funk. But Gypsy's funk does not feature the afro-tinge of Funkadelic or the Ohio Players. They are a white band, who uses unified harmonies, not unlike Crosby Stills and Nash. But underneth is a tightly woven, polished funk. Think 70s Steely Dan without the 40s and 50s jazz influence, or 70s Argent, and you'll know how tight this band is. But tight and polished does not mean sterile.. This funk is genuine--lots of organs, guitars and snap and crackle bass. The writting is good and the arrangements are carefully planned out. Beautiful, ellegent work. Do NOT let this sit in your pile, or on your wishlist. The baby will fall alseep on his or her own, eventually

The Heartless SOB asking $99.00,
This review is from: Antithesis (Audio CD)
I grew up with these guys and have been a collector for many years. I buy them whenever I can so others can enjoy music that will soon be impossible to find. The cd that I am trying to screw everyone on I paid $75.00 for and after amazons commission I will make a whole 10 or 15 dollars on for my time and effort. So excuse me for being such a heartless SOB and you can search the garage sales and try to find a 50 cent bargin cd since to me you are as cheap as I am heartless.

Please re-release this on CD!!!!!,
This review is from: Antithesis (Audio CD)
I wish the record company would release this and put an end to the money hungry, heartless sharks who will screw you out of $99.00 for this.....am not saying that it isn't a great CD...because it is......I just refuse to pay an obscene amount for any cd....because just about the time you do.....they will release it for regular price.
I hope these people who feel they can justify screwing somebody out of $99.00 for a CD....can live with themselves.... If it's such a GREAT cd...why are they so willing to part with it? |
