A Christmas album by Melanie was cause for celebration as anyone who is familiar with Melanie's live concerts knows, she LOVES Christmas, Christmas songs & carols. The first cut on the album, the very short "Ships In The Harbor," begins promisingly enough with haunting guitars and an etherial vocal by Melanie, and "Virgin Mary" into "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a meditative reflection into a boistrous celebration which works very well indeed. Unfortunately, the album goes steadily downhill after that. "Good King Wenceslaus" is a nasally nightmare as is "I Saw Three Ships," and "Hallelujah," is quite the mess and painful to listen to. "O Holy Night" sounds like it was never quite finished in the studio and "Coventry Carol" is merely hummed and anyone's reason is the best guess as to why the lovely lyrics were omitted. The orginal songs are really quite good but the arrangements are tepid and not well thought out to this ear. I thought maybe upon second, third and fourth spins that this collection would grow on me. Quite the contrary. It does not stand up well to other classic Christmas albums at all and listening to them side by side makes "Antlers" sound even more amateurish than it sounds on it's own. Yes, A true disappointment for this true believer who expected much better.

When first hearing this cd, the first five songs reminded me of the celebrations and diversity of Christmas in other cultures. All the songs, new, old, classic, and her own are more than what I anticipated. This is such a joy to liesten to. Her choice and delivery of all these songs will have children as well as adults singing along. The music has such auniversal theme that it puts awarm feeling in your chest and a smile on your face. Melanie's voice is a supurb match for each song, so disticntifuly delivered. I buy several copys each year to give to family and friends and have them open on November first. This music should be played thru the entire holiday season, not just Christmas day. If you are tired of the same old christmas albums most artist put out, this is a must buy. It's in a class all by its self. What a wonderful gift from a "Beautiful People".Daniel, central pacific coast.

I really like this album. Christmas albums have a tendency to be over-produced and trite. This album, however, is simple and fresh. Melanie's voice, over the years, has lost some of its range but none of its passion. This is a classic Christmas album with original songs by Melanie.
