Drama romántico del teatro español del XIX,

Corta tragedia de estilo romántico española. Muy entretenida, rápida de acción, variada en localizaciones y ambientes. Recoge diversidad de personajes en su reparto, desde los cómicos y populares hasta la nobleza de títulos y armas. El honor, vicios populares, las virtudes clásicas... es un buen cuadro de costumbres de la época social de la España del XVIII (aunque la obra es de mediados del XIX). Para mí es ésta la obra cumbre del teatro romántico español. Y se puede leer fácilmente de un tirón. Es de especial interés si se quiere observar cómo se percibía desde la España peninsular todo lo que provenía de las Américas: rodeado de misterio, probables prejuicios raciales, la búsqueda de fortuna con vistas a escalar socialmente. Por tanto es, ésta, también un buen retrato de época. Pero si en lo histórico se fija usted más que en el propio valor literario, no se olvide que todos somos -o hemos sido- hijos del pecado, y tanto nosotros como nuestros padres. Así que no juzgue, si no quiere ser juzgado más tarde.

Perhaps the most important work of early Spanish Romanticism, Don Alvaro is a must-read not only for its literary importance but also because for its interesting and compelling story. The tale of Don Alvaro encompasses many societal and philosophical issues, including racism, xenophobia, honor, love, religion, revenge, and mental health (!). Alvaro's beloved, Dona Leonor, is perhaps the strongest heroine of all of Spanish Romanticism, resolute in the face of adversity, true to her own beliefs and emotions, and loyal to the end.
Don Alvaro is a beautiful starting point for your journey into Spanish Romanticism. Take off now!
