El criterio de JOSE OLIVIO JIMENEZ al concebir esta ANTOLOGIA DE LA POESIA HISPANOAMERICANA (1914-1987), ya clasica, fue renunciar a una desmesurada extension del panorama de nombres y corrientes, que la hubieran convertido en un muestrario inoperante, y dedicar a los creadores incluidos en la recopilacion el espacio suficiente para que sus voces puedan ser debidamente apreciadas. En el volumen se recogen las principales corrientes de la poesia hispanoamericana inmediatamente posterior al modernismo: el vanguardismo, con su triple negacion de la belleza, la musicalidad poematica y la funcion comunicativa del lenguaje, y el posvanguardismo, cuyos polos de atraccion antagonicos son la poesia pura, con su tension intelectiva casi sobrehumana, y el superrealismo, encarnacion en el lenguaje del ansia de libertad total.
