Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- These brief biographical sketches cover the lives of notable Hispanics in outline form. All share an identical format: large print, good leading, ample margins, lots of period reproductions and photographs, and serviceable indexes. The quality of the prose varies considerably, from readable in Bolivar and Juarez to redundant in Novello . But pleasure reading these are not. There is enough information for reports, and the scope is a bit greater than encyclopedia entries. For slightly older audiences, more in-depth coverage is available on Chavez, Juarez, and Bolivar in Naurice Roberts's Cesar Chavez and La Causa and (1986) Carol Greene's Simon Bolivar (1989, both Childrens), and Dennis Wepman's Benito Juarez (Chelsea, 1987). However, none of them are as well suited as these titles to students needing hi/lo or ESL materials. Although the literary quality is not high, the information is correct and the nonthreatening look may appeal to students who would otherwise be put off by biographies. --Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

From Kirkus Reviews

The admirable Novello gets first-rate treatment in the new ``Hispanic Heritage'' series, aimed a notch or two higher than the picture-book crowd. From a sickly childhood in Puerto Rico to her leap to the top, the first female, first Hispanic Surgeon General is depicted in glowing terms. To make her subject accessible for this age group, Hawxhurst includes such details as Novello's wish to specialize in kidney treatment after an aunt died of kidney disease, and later, as a pediatrician, her becoming so upset by the sick children she saw that she often cried. The book is fairly well designed, incorporating rather stock b&w and color photos, though there are two confusingly placed blocks in just slightly smaller type (``Surgeon General C. Everett Koop'' and ``Hispanic-American Health'') that interrupt the narrative. Also, the author's knowledge that Novello was thinking about her childhood during her swearing-in ceremony seems dubious since no sources are cited. Still, a readable entry in a welcome series that also features Sim¢n Bol¡var and Benito Juarez--as ably handled, with the same caveats. Chronology; further reading; index.
