Book Description

A little ark book February 25, 1999
Winner, Patricia Wrightson Prize for children's literature, New South Wales Premier's Awards 1999 Honour Book, Book of the Year Younger Readers, Children's Book Council Book of the Year Awards 1998 Shortlisted, National Children's Literature Award, Festival Awards for Literature 1998 Antonio S is a boy who knows all sorts of things. Scarrabo the Magnificent is a magician. Professor Kettering is a doctor. They live together at the top of a grand old house built long ago for a duke. But who is Theodore Guzman, the secretive old man who lives downstairs? What mysterious things does he know? It takes someone like Antonio S to find out. In his first book for children, Odo Hirsch has written a wonderfully warm and eccentric story about a boy who explores a secret passage that leads to the very heart of the house where the magical world of Theodore Guzman comes to life.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

The old mansion where Antonio lives holds secrets, but it's no school for wizards; and the mysterious presence in one of the apartments is not an ogre, but a quiet old man, who is seldom seen or heard. Antonio's imagination stirs when he learns that the recluse was a famous stage actor, and he feels compelled to win the old man's attention and approval. This thoughtful, almost rambling story, with its focus on character, is a wonderful oddity among current middle-grade novels-indeed, its Australian author has hardly been noticed. Perhaps this audio version, beautifully performed by Catherine Milte, will help it find its American audience. This is best for the "bookish" child, or one who is drawn to writing, theater, history or poetry. S.P. This review is from: Antonio S and the Mystery of Theodore Guzman Pb (A little ark book) (Paperback)
My adult son: "Antonio S is a rather special book. We all like it and it really is something out of the ordinary."

... later comment: "We still have no idea where the 'Theodore Guzman' story is headed, which is unusual for a kids' book."

"We": my son is reading it aloud to his own son (10) and daughter (8.)
