5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi, human development story, November 2, 1998

This review is from: Anvil of the Heart (Hardcover)
This is one of my favourite books. It created my interest in the martial art Aikido and is a good tale of someone who spent their life accepting the societal norm reaching a point of self question for the first time. Very inspiring....

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book, April 3, 2003

This review is from: Anvil of the Heart (Hardcover)
This is an important book. It's no longer in publication, but well worth the time to find. This was Bruce Holmes first novel (I assume it's the only one he's written). 'Anvil of the Heart' is one of those rare novels that is entertaining and really ABOUT something. It was written some time ago, but delves into the idea of creating super children and people that are 'perfect' . Holmes suggests (and I believe him) that our flaws are what makes us human, and only by embracing those flaws do we realize our magnificence.

This book is about what it means to be human. Read and enjoy this one, it's well worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for future-based sci-fi, November 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Anvil of the Heart (Hardcover)
This book has a cool thought on what the future holds if mankind is stupid enough to alter itself. The character developement was incredible, the ending sad, triumphant, and a little funny. I recomend this book to everyone.

I read this book when I was 15 and I still love it to this day. It is very well written and has very realistic and well developed charicters. The examples of martial arts are very insperational to those who wish to take them. And I reccomend this book for every one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memory Lane, April 11, 2011

This was a favorite back in my college days. I will not spoil it for readers by describing the plot line--read it yourself--but will say that it was worthy of consideration for the Nebula Award. This purchase was remarkable for being made directly from the author, who turns out to be a heck of a nice guy. Mr. Holmes inscribed the book to me and included a personal note. Really took me back to my science fiction days, which I thought I'd left behind in the 1980's.

I would recommend this volume to anyone with an affinity for the genre. There are a few works of science fiction to which I return periodically--notably Professor Tolkein's seminal work,as well as select pieces by Heinlein, Asimov, Clark, Haldeman, Norman, Dickson and others. I'd put "Anvil of the Heart" right up there, and have read it enough that my old paperback copy was looking pretty decrepit. Now I have an original hardback in perfect condition, autographed to me by the author. How cool is that!
